Bit of a long story this one...

Was driving along and had a major overheating problem along with the battery light coming on, figured it was a nackered water pump and possibly thrown the alternator/waterpump belt.

Replaced the pump and all the belts but when I was doing this I noticed that I was missing the woodruff key on the crank/underdrive pulley and the the pulley had come loose. There was also a chunk taken out of the crank at the side of the slot where they key fits in.

I put everything back together as it should be and it all seemed fine, for about five minutes :( exactly the same problem again, the pulley had broken loose from the crank. :headvswal

havent taken the belts+pulley off again yet, going to have the AA take it up to z tech so ryan can have a gander

but was wondering if anybody else had ever seen this before?

Im guessing the chip in the crank is causing the woodruff to come loose, seems a bit of a weak way to secure the pulley but im sure there's a good reason for it..

if this is the cause any idea if a new slot can be cut into the crank while its in place, dont think I can afford engine out antics (or replacing the crank shaft) at the moment :(

Cheers

Dave

but if you put a new slot in the crank, the timing on the pulley wont be right and you would be guessing at the cars timing.

Really? oh bugger. :(

dave i never got a woodruff key with my sgp crank, besides i thought the crank pulley is held on by a 27mm nut  did that explain your fan/waterpump wobble

the waterpump/fan wobble was me being a numbnuts, one of the bolts on the waterpump pulley was not on properly!!

there is a big bolt to hold the pulley on with but it just undoes it self without the woodruff key?!!?! maybe im missing something here?

I wasnt sure the pulley took part in the engine timing, it just drives the anicillary bits and bobs (water pump, PAS etc)...

Greg, you should have secured the SGP pulley with the original key bud  Did you take it off altogether?

been doing research on twinturbo.net, doesnt look good, possibly need a new crank shaft :( probably cheaper to slap a 2nd hand engine in there....

David don't start panicing yet mate , as stuart has said you cant really put another key opening in the crank as it will throw the timing marks off and you would also need to take the crank out to do this , I will have a look so like I say don't panic yet

Moving the timing marks round the pulley would be childs play compared to cutting another slot in the crank, especially in the car.

Could a good industral adhesive help, both for the key and then the pulley too. Worth a try maybe

Just pack the chunk with some liquid metal - put the key in and replace the pulley :) Obviously let the liquid metal set before putting the pulley back or it'll be there for the rest of time :D
