I'm sure someone else has come across this problem before. I have just taken out a car insurance policy based on having a Cat 1 alarm & immobiliser fitted (the system was fitted before I owned the Zed). I sent the note I got with the car from the original installer of the alarm which basically stated Cat 1 Scorpion alarm and immobiliser system fitted.

The insurance company have written back saying that the document I sent has not got enough detail and want more information i.e. model information etc. :headvswal

Has anyone ever taken their car to a.n.other alarm installer to have their system inspected and 'certified' for insurance purposes? I want to avoid having to have a new system installed just to get a bit of paper for the insurers. The system is a good one - I just can't proove it!!

Any ideas?

yes, you should be able to have it verified at a Thatcham approved installer.

do you have the manual for the alarm - i could check it for you if you have that.

ps - scorpion has now gone bust :(

Unfortunatley I don't have the manual, but looking at the various 'bits' of the system and comparing it to the info on the Scorpion website, I am 99% sure it is one of the 2 systems Scorpion had Thatcham Cat 1 approval on.

Does anyone know if there is a register or similar of approved installers? I need one around the Chester area.

Thanks for your prompt responses guys...

Cheers Cybernet - in Chester as well! :)

I will give him a shout and see if he can help...

I had a bit of a nightmare with that. When I bought my car last week, it had a Clifford G5 on it I think with the remote starter on it, which is a great toy, but not Thatcham approved. I've got it booked into a place on Wednesday to get a new one. Insurance for me requires Thatcham 1 approved, so it's gonna cost me £300 including fitting to get installed. I've been told they can fit a remote start on it though, which is still nice to show off with!!

Cheers

Jon

Jon, find out which Clifford has been fitted, you may have a Cat1 alarm with the remote start fitted as an extra. Get them to disconnect the remote start and write you a certificate out. Any decent company will do this rather than take your money when they don`t have to.

Bob

I didn't think about that, but the remote start and everything is on the same fob. I'll ask the guys at the alarm place, they seem like a good bunch, have been running in my area for years, so hopefully if there's a way around it they will tell me rather than taking my money, which could be spent on some shiny things for the car.

Cheers Bob, will definately get them to look!

Jon

The remote start is on a 2 wire fly lead, if they know Cliffords they will know this can be simply unplugged and you are left with a full Cat1 system. Have you got any paperwork or instructions for it?

Bob

Any good installer should view your alarm and issue

a ticket if it has been installed to the recomended

standards etc. I have fitted 2 cobra cat 1 alarms

for friends and had this done. the main thing to

check is that all cable joints are soldered, heat shrunk

and supported with cable ties. The company charged

me £25.00 for the inspection. This is still cheeper

tha paying £150.00 for a full install tho!

hope this helps :)

Allan

hey,

I haven't got any previous paperwork for it unfortunately. I just assumed that because it was a clifford and remote start that it was the non-thatcham approved variety, read it in a car magazine somewhere this month.

So even the non-approved clifford can be turned into one by just taking the remote start off? The guy on the phone said that he could fit a thatcham approved alarm and then fit a remote starter on it using a seperate RF transmitter or something like that?

Cheers

Jon

Remote start can be added to any of the Clifford G4 or G5 range. Clifford do non-approved systems aswell as Cat1 systems. Remote start can be added to either of them at the same time or at a later date. You may have a cat1 system fitted that has had the remote start fitted as an option or it could be a basic unit again with remote start fitted. The only system they do that has it as standard is the Avantguard.

Try and find the alarm in the car and there will be a model number on it. Let me know what it is and i`ll let you know if it`s an approved system or not.

Bob

Probably best give me a call for that info !!

Yeah I guess, wasn't thinking!! If I don't have any joy in the morning, I'll give you a call what time is best to call in the daytime?

Jon

Out at a couple of dealers in the morning so leave it till after lunch.
