zed is dead.

oh dear - the car was on its way to the garage - and the engine cut out about 50yards after leavin the house. i fiddled with some of the petrol cables and stuff and it started briefly but er, my z is now permanently residing on my street.

bugger.

Ahhh veilside. very sorry to hear that. any ideas what the prob is??

yeah, kinda - somethin danny suggested. some fuel pipes or somethin, dont have the right pressure in them at startup. ive tightened the ones i can get too [im just waiting for my mate to come round with some more tools] - there are a few more under the engine cover that probably need tigthening.

failing that - it could be something to do with the fact that it 'might' be dropping one or more cylinders. [i was on my way to the garage to find out if this was the case - when the car dies half way up the road]

anyway, its not goin anyway for the moment anyway.

arse

Good Luck fella!

I am sure if anyones local to you and passing they wouldnt mind offering a hand... mind you that is easy for me to say all the way over here on the isle of wight:~

Seriously hope you get it sorted..

Glen

cheers glen lad - im gonna ignore the problem for a couple of hours [come england!!! - and ireland!]

Cutting out like that could be the PTU(Power Transistor Unit) packing up!

Trust me, if you've got a cylinder down you'll notice that the car chugs under load or at idle. That's what mine was doing but all sorted now...did I mention that SE fixed my car? wink.gif

Have you sorted the problem yet? If so what was it.

Regards

How do you mean by dead? nothing at all?

CheerZ,

Andy

sorry just watchin american physco. er, yeah.

no , imean, it started ok - then i let it idle for about 5-10mins, then i started to drive off slowly, and the rev needle went a bit loopy and then the engine just cut out. and then refuse to spark up again. then i tried it about 4 hours later [after the football [bloody england]] and it started ok.

it seems to do this all the time.

im fairly sure its not sparkin up in at least one cylinder. i was tryin to get it to the garage. i could have a look myself - but i not exactly sure what to look for and where.

and it definately sounds real petroly.

i hope none of you guys ever have to push a zed up a hill with less than 20 people to help. its a killer!

If you're not sparking on one cylinder then it is likely to be the coil connectors, if all cylinders pack up at once it is likley to be the PTU. Call me before you shell out £270+ on a new one, because I may be able to fix the old.

so you dont think there is anything a garage mechanic could, er, do. - and there's no way that i would just need to change the spark plugs or anything?

er. yeah. Ben

Will the car start everytime you turn the key

If so then does it run lumpy (ie Not on all 6

cylinders)

When you say it sounds petroly can you smell petrol badly.

If you can answer these questions it will help pinpoint the exact problem.

it does usually start ok, and when you start drivin and give it some gas, the car doesnt really respond, and the revs kinda go a bit loopy and the car kinda pops and mosfires and then - as it did yesterday - the engine cuts out.

i tried for about half an hour or son to get it goin again, and did did start once but justr cut out again, i came back to the car a couple pf hours later and it started ok. so i drove it back on my drive.

and it does kinda vibrate sometimes when your drivin it.specifically [i think] around 3rd and 4th gear.

yeah it does smell petroly, i think both out of the engine and the exhaust.

ps. why are we both up so early.

cheers . ben

Yeah mine managed to come loose yesterday and i picked up a big misfire the ptu.

plugged it back in and its fine.

I always maintain look for small little probs first, it saves you money and alot of time.

so,er, how would i go about that then?

Sounds like the PTU to me.... give the loom leading to - and from the PTU/CAS a good wiggle with the ignition turned on - if you hear a clicking noise then - bingo - a bad connection! Get cleaning.

Hope this helps - been there done that - not nice!

AndyGP

Just thought I'd butt in here - Veilside m8, you say the revs go loopy - is your tacho jumping up and down madly, like varying between 2000 and 4000rpm or something?

If it is, that would be a symptom of the CAS more than the PTU - although it can be hard to tell the two apart..

My CAS connections were a bit suspect, and if I nailed the throttle they'd come loose, the tacho would wobble between 4000 and 6000rpm and the car wasn't going anywhere fast.. As soon as the ECU looses the CAS signal the engine shuts down - the only reason it came back on was essentially because I was moving at high speed (bumpstarting it, in essence)..

Like AndyGP said - wiggle the PTU & cas connections, and poke the wiring a bit down there and see if it fires into life...

Az

will do. er.

ps. cos im lazy, you couldnt describe were these cas and ptu connectors are could u.

cheers. ben

Yeah I'd go with cas or ptu - the petrol smell is because the fuel isn't getting burnt because there isn't a spark. The cas and ptu are located on the front of the engine towards the top. As you look at the front of the engine from the front of the car, the cas is the round silver thing on the right hand side and the ptu is the silver rectangular thing on the left hand side (in easy terms).

I'll try and find a picture for you showing where the two are located. They both have rectangular connectors going to them.
