good question with the MOT. Im sure several people on here still have theirs in KMPH though.

Not 100% on that but i had a Volvo that i took for MOT with a sticky speedo that you had to tap to get to work, when i told them that they said that its not part of the test :o

I'm pretty sure that the speedo is NOT tested as part of the MOT.

I presume it's illegal not to have one, it just doesn't matter what it reads in...

Mine certainly passed an MOT in km/h.

speedo is NOT tested on a mot i hat a gt turbo for 2 years with no speedo and it past every time also on a mot they dont road test it so theyed never know :)

having said that i think after a certain year 94 i think it has to display in mph :(

Might be stuck with 112mph top speed though!

Bob

hes lucky to get that

steve

Mph is needed for SVA test, but not the Mot.

Marcus, you'd be better off trying to get hold of a set of UK clocks if your worried about the speedo conversion.

If u pull the clocks out, u will see the convertor at the back.

Sory to P iss on everyone parade about the MOT but I think youl find it is suposed to be part of teh MOT test, however most places dont check as they have no way of checking as to its accuracy, but it clearly states that all spedos in this country must DISPLAY MPH.

Good job they dont look then :)

If you got MPH and your not sure if its correct why not get next to a normal car and check it. If youve got larger rims youl speed will be out anyway.

Not part of MOT but has to be in KPH AND MPH so both must be on the speedo face, not a problem if u already have one but it wont be anywhere near accurate..

Question....if you convert it to KPH will the trip/odometer read higher too ie..every 60 miles will begin to show as 100..?

The convertor changes the milage to read in Miles done if you take this out you will clock up in Kilometers so will read higher figures.

Do like has been said take it out with someone who has uk clocks to see what it really reads at. Thats what i did when mine played up and Chunk said is was about 3mph out, but then i am running fooking big tyres....lol.

Sory Mate, but it has to have MPH on the guage for it to be legal in this country. Its one of the jobs that they are suposed to do when converting. But again they dont tend to look at it for some reason.

Why do i know.... just failed an MOT and he mentioned it, said he wouldnt do anything about it as long as I was aware that the cops may pick up on it if I ever have an issue. SO just passing that info on. I also checked on the DVLA site

what about if i convert it back and dont remove the mph sticker. The 112 limit wont be a problem as i have an aftermarket chip.

that's what i'd do - it's a one in a million that the police would actually ask you to take them for a spin so they can check!!! All they're gonna do is glance at the speedo - but chances are they'd have you bang to rights for goin over a tonm and wouldn't need to prosecute for anything else!!

it is NOT a testable item, it may very well be a legal requirement, it is not something you can fail an MOT on

link to online testers manual

con & use regs, dull as you like but ispeedo has to be in both, doubt you would have it checked though,

Dont get confused between theese and the MOT, take tinted glass, Construction & use regs apply but is not tested on the MOT..(yet...???)

hope this clears it up.

speedometers

40. - (1) Subject to paragraphs (2) and (3), a motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately.

I have put 2 imports through an MOT and the speedo was reading KPH both times...

It has never been an issue for me.

Im sure my odometer still clocks up in KMS, either that or my fuel consumption is terrible and ive racked up a 5hit load of miles

Ohh and thats taking into account that my odometer has an anti-motorway attitide, where when i drive on the motorway it racks up no miles at all, very weird.

10 miles from Bristol to Solihull LOL
