What speed over the limit is acceptable?

Say its a 30 limit, no one about, the road is well lit, no schooll, no shops, just houses, no parked cars and the road is straight......

30mph...and by that I mean 0mph over the limit or less.

but if were talking a 60/70 limit, then I have a completely different opinion.

Ask a judge and he will say

eh? are you taking the pi55

I personally think that its all to do you traffic and road conditions

not how fast you could get to if you tried

i go about 30ish anyway

my misus goes about 42 everywhere!

I think 36 should be a let off.

Sorry bud but a 30 mph limit, should be 30mph no matter what.

But like that has been said before 60/70 limit different story ;) we all speed so we shouldn't have a moan if we get caught :x:

My Mrs just had a ticket through the post, for speeding through a speed camera at 38mph, in a 30mph zone, and as I told her, if your stupid enough to do it, then dont complain when you have to pay the price!!

There's a good reason for the majority of 30mph zone's, as Legarth said, if it's a 60/70, then thats a new ball game!!

doh misread,

if its clear and no parked cars, then I'll sometimes go up to 40 tops. but it all depends on the road...

they recently changed a 40 road here to a 30, when its blatantly a 40 at least

Coincidently they are also in the process of setting up a speed camera there.

You know where im coming from then, James

afraid we dont neil depends what side of bristol your travelling :slap:

I thought it said with parked cars but if its clear and you have 2-3 metres either side of the road visibility.

But generaly in a 30mph I'd never go over 35, especially in populated areas, due to my own misfortune as a kiddie & running in between parked cars!

to me speeding in a 30 Zone is more serious than 110 on the M5 which I got a kick in arse for. :(

What pisses me off, some on at work was caught on a 30 limit road in the middle of the night doing 70mph. Yes there are no parked cars, and no houses within 200 yards of the road, but he was doing over twice the limit.

He was complaining to me that he got pulled over, as it was the middle of the night, no cars etc, but he got let off with a warning.

This person drives like a fecking nutter all the time. He will do 50 in a 30 zone in the middle of the afternoon and think nothing of it. But then one of use will creep over 34mph in a 30 zone and then get 3 points and £60 fine.

The thing that winds me up when driving the 300 they will target you for having the fast car! if you was doing the same speed in a fiesta or micra then that would be a warning

My opinion also.

I always obey 30, 40 and all sensible 50 limits but "national speed limits" are a diffrerent matter, providing it's safe dry and clear. Remember until the 1960s national limit meant no speed limit, although most cars coudn't safely cruise at 70mph for any distance anyway

Assuming clear, dry conditions and traffic flow being favourable, on national speed limit roads my general speeds are:

single carriageway A/B road 70-80mph

dual carriageway 80-90mph

motorway 90-100mph (although on occasion the ZX has crept up to the limiter!! ;) )

That is in the ZX incidentally - they would be 10-20mph lower in the Corsa or Rav and a lot lower in bad weather, whatever car I'm driving.

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Broadly speaking, the thing that kills pedestrians (eg your or someone else's dog / cat / child / loved one of your choice) is energy absorbed in acceleration or deceleration. i.e. being suddenly accelerated from 0mph to the 40mph the car that has just hit you is doing. Or, conversely, having had your head accelerated to 40mph by the car that just hit you and then coming to a massively sudden deceleration by, eg, trying to do 40mph through tarmac.

Energy - or momentum in this case - is denoted by m = 1/2 (m*v squared) so it rises as the square of the speed. This is why the extra 5mph from 30mph to 35mph kills far more people than the difference between 70mph and 75mph.

A table is here http://www.safe2travel.co.uk/speeding/

If you hit a pedestrian at 30mph, he has a better than even chance of surviving. If you hit one at 40mph, his odds are less than 1 in 5 of staying alive.

That's why doing "just over 5mph" faster than the speed limit in a 30 limit is really serious IMHO and doing 75 in a 70 is irrelevant.

But what if you live in an area that has over zealous do-gooder councilors lowering speed limits to 20 or 30mph on roads that have always been national speed limit?

This happened on a stretch of A38 near me and ofcourse most drivers ignore the 30 and risk getting points from the scamera operaters who prey on that stretch.

There's been more accidents too as it encourages aggression and forced overtaking of the few that stick to the 30.

End result is they are now scrapping the 30 and going back to how it was!

Shame about the total waste of 100k + in signs, paint-chevrons/white lines/red lines, red tarmac, green tarmac, cameras and all their time spent planning it. tssers.

I can think of dozens of new 30 limits on country roads where it's safe to do 60.

Likewise I can think of dozens of 30 limits in housing estates where you wouldnt want to exceed 20.

So saying 30 in a 30 and no more, doesnt make any sense to me srry :-)

Trev, when you hit a pedestrian, you are responsible - not the "over-zealous do-gooders". I agree with you that there are a lot of limits which have been lowered for some strange speed-nazi reason - there are a bunch round here.

But what's to do? If we speed and either get caught or (much worse) cause an accident, the speed-nazis will say "there you are, told you so".

So for me, stick to 30 in a 30 (because 1. the increased risk of you ending up with a death on your conscience/bonnet and 2. why does it matter?).

Cheers - Gio

I know what you're saying Gio and I do stick to 30 in built up areas , less in housing estates. But it matters because on wide open roads with ridiculous 30 limits... nah i cant do it, crawling along like a snail for no sensible or logical reason!

I think all roads bar motorways will eventually be reduced to 20 or 30, then they'll smack a toll on all motorways, they must have some devious plan like that to be reducing all the limits.

I personally dont think concentrating more effort on speed enforcement is the answer to reducing death rates on uk roads, which were up last year despite the £millions the camera partnerships raked in from ppl driving safely who never caused an accident or came anywhere near to doing so.

Still, I'm wasting my breath I know, most ppl will quite happily fall in line it seems ;-)

It's a no brainer really, I will NEVER drive over 30 in a built up area, the thought of hitting someone's innocent kid or anyone else for that matter turns my stomach. I even get people right up my backside (Taxi drivers, couriers or chavs etc.) wanting me to speed up, but I'll be damned if I'll let them piss me off and speed. As has been said in this topic loads of times, open roads with no other cars etc. ie. 3am on the M11 is completely different, it's your own life, you're responsible for it, but 5 mph in residential areas can make all the difference to someone surviving an accident, to you killing another human being. It's no way worth it in my opinion.

my dad was run over 15 years ago in a 30 limit by someone racing through a red light, the police believe impact was around 30mph and he ended up with, massive skull fracture, skull removed, broken jaw in 3 places, dislocated shoulder, broken collar bone in two places, permenant double vision and epilepsy, coma for 3 days, smashed up knees from impact with bumper and he was thrown over 45foot along the road. He's not exactly a small bloke either and the only reason he survived was due to a bag he was carrying absorbing some of the impact.

And that is the reason why i stick to 30 mph in a 30 zone.

Its a different kettle of fish on a motorway/quite main A road. I will have my fun where i can, thats why we have quick cars but if its a built up area or a populated area weither it has parked cars or not, well lit or not etc etc......

Its just not worth it!

Be safe all

Entirely depends on the road, if its obviously safe to do so - wide road, no parked cars, wide & clear verges, no schools, well lit etc.. then MAYBE up to about 40mph. But then again, for some 30mph roads (particularly the one I live down) doing 30mph is HOMICIDAL, so I do about 15 - 20mph. It all depends.

There's a big campaign in Hayes at the moment because there have been a few road deaths recently. Yes, drivers should be responsible, not go too fast and certainly not drive up the pavement  ;) , but what ever happened to the good ole Green Cross Code? It would be a help if some pedestrians did not have LEMMING like qualities!

I've seen a few people get knocked over, and to be honest it was their own stupid fault. In the wilderness this would be called survival of the fittest, or 'culling the heard"!!! :p

lots of NSL (60MPH) roads are more dangerous than 30MPH roads - the law is an ass ! but the danger is largely on the driver (ie unlikely to run ne1 over)/other cars.

its not speed limits that are so bad, although as already stated most roads are fine for a 40-50 but have a 30 instead. the annoying thing is when

1. councils change a road speed limit but dont put what it is now! so it used to be a 40 mph zone but now the sign says new speed limits apply :headvswal

2. those speed bumps that are two lumps in the road and are absolutely everywhere!! they just wreck your car and they only slow people down in modified cars like us. the councils aim them at our majority but have you ever noticed 4x4s reps cars etc just fly over them at 50 easy without a movement oh but sorry I forgot mr councillor those kind of cars dont kill people!!!

really annoying :nelson:

And just imagine if you were a neck/spinal patient in somewhat of a 'hurry' to get to hospital in the back of an ambulance :( :(

A bloke I know is a paramedic in West London (a place COVERED in speed bumps/humps, width restrictions and barricaded chicanes) and he doesn't rate your chances too highly if you're critical :( :wack:

I find the Zed goes over them with no problems due to its width, wheels go either side, and as long as your not lowered, its as if there is no speedbump there at all...however if your lowered that would make a really nasty mess.

My Bmw is the same, although the Missus's car its too narrow..and thats an MPV.
