.....once every two engine revs (ie about 8 times per second @ 1000 rpm).

Only under part throttle, it goes when I lift off. It is drowned out by ambient noise in anything over 2nd gear and over 2K in 1st. Otherwise it is noticable.

As it is approx once every 2 revs is it an injector or something to do with a coil pack or plug? I haven't tried anything to solve it yet, haven't changed plugs etc as I thought you lot might be able to point me in the right direction before I started (what a lazy barsteward!).

Apart from the noise the car is OK in terms of engine performance. Any ideas gents?

That is the strangest description I have heard.

Could it be your injectors, they make a tapping sound.

Or the lifters. they make a tapping sound too. What grade do you use? Try changing to a different grade.

:) Is it def a tick tick or a tap tap? I had trouble with my lifters but you could hear them what ever the engine revs?

Is it a 'tick, tick' a 'tap, tap' or could it be a 'click, click'!!! :) I love it when people try and descride things on the web. I ve been there myself LOL.

hydraulic tappets tapping - lack of use - use decent 40 grade synthetic and use the car more and it'll disappear as the gunge is washed out of the sticky one.

I had a tick but it was the front of the engine, it turned out to be the belt tentioner because the damper had gone in the bottom pulley or so the mechanic said, but this was a tick every two revolutions.

Willieo what Oil do you recommend, I have this tapping and I'm sure it's the tappetts. I only take it on short runs to and from work and it's started to do this...

mines gets Castrol RS0-40 - I vote thin stuff - 4 years now and its never run so quiet. even on start up the clatter it used to do after no use for a week or so has gone. There are lots of opions on oil and some want the thick stuff at 60 but unless you are permanently on the track with a 500bhp+ motor I think its wrong to go that thick.

Thanks, it's due an Oil Change so I'll fill it up with this and see if it helps:)

just be careful if you're switching to fully synth - you should 'flush' the engine with a few short interval changes as it's so efficient and breaking down accumulated gunk!

If you do a search, there was a fair bit of discussion on it a while back.

I flushed my engine twice on seperate oil changes used different grades still had a bad tappet noise was starting to sound like a fiesta in the end :(

Tick tick, tap tap, who knows? Thanks for the oil comments but I'm not convinced. I already use 5W/40 fully synthetic and use engine flush before each change and the car is my daily driver so it does get lots of use. It is getting an oil change this weekend so I'll see if that clears it up.

The belt tensioner explanation sounds interesting as my tap is once every two revs also. I know the belt was done some time ago but the invoice doesn't mention the tensioner, it was done by Nissan but that is no guarantee is it!!

Check it in the dark in case it is a HT voltage leak somewhere.A tiny blue spark from the plug area would make a ticking sound.

Shows what I know, I changed the oil and the noise has gone!

Thanks guys.
