OK, lets get the 'funnies' out of the way first, " Well turn up the brightness" and "Take off your shades" :p :nana2:

Right, my settings are set to maximum, and I mean MAX!!! But it still is a lot darker then the one I'm on at the moment at work. There is also a very, very slight 'ripple' going up the screen all the time

Anyone with an idea as to what is wrong with it, or is it time to call it a day and buy a new one?

TIA

Have you tried a different colour temprature?. Should be on your monitors setup menu.

Have you checked out the prices of CRT monitors these days, they are cheap as chips. So might be a good opertunity to upgrade :)

I can highly recomend the Illyama Pro series, I all ways buy these for customers and can't fault them.

Cheers

if your feeling brave you can open monitor up and tweak the pot on the flyback. There should be 2 pots - one for focus the other for brightness - its not really a proper fix but may get you out of trouble. as for the ripple sounds like interference.

BE CAREFUL IF YOU OPEN THE MONITOR!!!!!! Not joking - its very dangerous - the flyback is the great big black thing that has a red lead that attaches to the tube - Theres a lot of voltage in there even when switched off and unplugged!!!! So do so at your own risk!

For £35 you can get a cheapy monitor though

yep if it aint your tube...(which it prob is TBH)....look at the advanced monitor settings under control panel...make sure the hertz value is correct.....and deffo take extra care re the shock if you take the back off....when they bite it can be bad

I can vouch for that! Got a hell of a shock a good few years back when repairing a monitor that had supposedly been off for weeks. :slap:

Tell me about it, I still have the marks from the last time I played with a CRT. Boy does it give you one hell of a belt.

The same can be said for any switched mode power supply with big caps LOL. Try putting your finger across the pins on one of those buggers :x: Still got the marks 7 years later LMAO

Yep, I got a belt once and the screwdriver flew up in the air and practically embedded itself in the ceiling at a customers site!! :)

And that was with the monitor switched off!

PLEASE, if you are going to this leave the monitor switched off for at least 24Hrs. I am unsure how long it takes to disip[ate the charge but I know I would not be happy doing it. Get yerself a new one :)

Yeah, they store their charge for hours, even after being switched off!. That's why I just chuck em and recomend a new one when they go wrong.

leave it shut unless you are a trained engineer, i discharged a few capacitors from a powersupply through me once, i'm not sure if it beig plugged into the wall or me being drunk saved me a nasty shock.

try updating your monitor and video card drivers, if that doesnt work then bin it and pick up a new crt or LCD :)

Depending on your gfx card, OS and gfx card drivers you might have some control in your display settings called "gamma". Try nudging that up until it's bright enough for you. As for the wave, sounds to me like your monitor is goosed. Perhaps an interweb trip to dabs, scan or misco is in order. All will ship next day. Whatever you buy make sure it has a good refresh rate at your desired resolution and a 3 year warranty.

If you fancy a drive to Middlesbrough I can sell you a cracking 19" Iiyama Visionmaster Pro 450 for about £75 (second hand of course).

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.

Hmmmmmmmm think I'll have to put up with it for a while longer yet, as I'd much rather spend time and money on the Zed anyway :D Ultimate answer is that I want a 19" flat panel monitor, but those sort of funds just can not be justified yet, the Zed is much more wanting ;)

one last thing - the line that goes up the screen - that *could* be caused by external power supply. You havent got a printer / fan / power supply / adapter close to the monitor do you?

TBH I've got loads of 'stuff' near the monitor and always have had, except that I've recently got a new printer. It's in the same place as the old one and is about 2 1/2 feet away from the monitor.

The anti-suge trailing socket is directly behind the monitor, with a mobile phone charger plugged in. The PC is underneath the monitor along with my broadband modem.

Above the monitor is a TV and video/DVD combi which is a fairly recent addition.

You could try unplugging them one by one to prove which one is causing interference, you may need to move the trailing socket from directly behind your monitor if not. I'd put money on one of them causing interference and causing the wavy line up your screen
