Despite the demands by the vicious dog hating scum that wanted my German Shepherd destroyed for biting the person who completely uninvited came up to my dog and started poking around his face, British justice has shown some common sense and allowed him to live.

Now we just need our pathetic government to allow us to treat intruders the way that they deserve

Nice one!

OK - I'll be controversial (no change there then :nelson: )

I don't think ppl shud b allowed to own a dog which can kill/main. You cannot predict what an animal will ever do - it's like owning a gun which can go off anytime.

TBH, I cannot see the appeal (a bit like fox hunting) - is it a macho thing ?? but that makes you look a coward, as the dog will be scarier than you. How can you "love" something which could choose to hurt or even kill you ?!

I don't like being scared, and rottweilers/pittbulls/alsations etc. scar me. Yo may know the dog is soft - but I don't. Also, some dogs are trained to be vicious, so how can that be safe ?

Hey Dave, life is a gamble and there is FAR TOO MUCH banning going on in this pathetic country. The instances of dogs attacking people are few and far between and when the last time you heard of anyone being killed by a dog? (by the way, I'm not much of a dog fan, but I'll defend the right of ANYONE to have whatever dog they choose) We have to get a perspective in this country and realise that people do die. It will happen to all of us in the end one way or another. We keep taking all the fun out of life on the off-chance that someone could be hurt. CARS ARE NEXT!!!!!! Soon, everything in the slightest bit interesting in life will be banned because of something that COULD happen, or did happen TO ONE PERSON FFS!

2p ;)

How can you "love" something which could choose to hurt or even kill you ?!

Have a look at the statistics on how many spouses kill their partners :( So I suggest that you stay celibate from now on :)

Secondly my dog has never been trained to attack anything, so I take extreme offense here. He has certificates for training and is an aged soft and cuddly family pet who on the day of the incident was particulary unwell due to the heat plus his numerous other health issues. He did not "go after" the person but was deliberately approached and to say the least pestered by them despite my polite requestes that they leave him alone specifically because he was unwell.

And as you said, you are scared of German Shepherds so hopefully you would have the sense not to go and stick your hands in the face of one. If someone came up to me and stuffed their hand into my face I would have decked them. This is not exactly a physically possible option for a dog who incidently did little more that nip at the person as he jumped up in surprise. A much more reasonable reaction than in some of our British communities you can be murdered for showing disrespect. Any animal only his his survival instinct whereas it is only man who deliberatly chooses to kill for self gratification.

FUME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kind of agree with this.

I'm not saying the judgement on your dog was wrong or commenting on your case in any way.

But aggro dogs (even if some aren't aggro according to their owners) don't seem like the best idea to me.

When I used to sit in court and crims were getting prosecuted, their mums / grandmothers always turned up and wept: "He's such a good boy, he wouldn't hurt anyone" etc, etc

When I used to live with my parents, the neighbour's GSD cleared the fence in a single bound and sunk its teeth into her. Not nice.

I do understand people are very fond of these dogs but if they got less threatening ones in the first place, they might have got just as attached to those.

TBH, I cannot see the appeal (a bit like fox hunting) - is it a macho thing

And also, I am far from macho man. My wife and I are enthusiasts of the breed which when properly treated is the most loyal and adorable companion. Sadly the majority of German Shepherds are ill treated by the very macho men that you correctly mention. A particular case near us involves a poor German Shepherd that spends most of its life locked in a white van "protecting" somebodies tools. Not surprisingly it is disturbed.

In our particular case, the macho man was the thug who wanted my dog destroyed. The same man who threatened to hurt my nine year old son and to kill both me and my wife. Who is the bigger danger to society, him or my dog?

And as for less threatening dogs, more people are bitten by Jack Russels Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers each year.

LESS FUME!! No offense intended but this issue hits a nerve.

Yeah but you can punt one of them 50 yards down the road a lot easyer! ;)

Apparently plans are in place to do so.

A car can kill people unexpectedly, if you hit a patch of black ice for example.

As is already said life is full of risks, it does not mean we have to ban everything that is of a threat to us just because we could end up hurt or dead. My auntie has a german sheppard, it is the most tame dog i have every met, really friendly and would probably lick me to death, but i pity the burgalar that tries to break in, as this thing is 6 foot when it stands up on its back legs. If a dog has been trained well then nobody should worry unless the dog is provoked.

Its like a huge boxer, they could be the nicest bloke in the world untill you provoke them, then its game over.

2pennies worth:D

Apparently plans are in place to do so.

There are conservative plans to do so, but it would appear that the government think everything is fine as it is! :xxx:

i had all sorts of dogs n other animals and tbh its true there are bad owners and nutty animals...my old great dane had a brain tumour and went violent (had him put down)...and i was cr@p at keeping ducks..:D......point is pets/animals provide much more pleasure / company than harm / injury on balance...so society is all the better for them...history should teach us we owe our lives to these dumb critters on so many levels....i vote to reintroduce the beaver...!!!

....i vote to reintroduce the beaver...!!!

I agree, I can't get enough!! ROFL  ;)

I agree, I can't get enough!! ROFL  ;)

thing is do we go for the smooth european one or the hairer bushier canadian type....VOTE NOW.....!!! :p

Well I am pleased for you Posidrive. I had a similar instance with my cat. Someone came up uninvited and started to mess with it and it sruck out and scratched them.

Animals are animals, everyone of them has a different personality. If someone came up to me and started prodding me and generally pissing me off then I would srike out myself. TBH it comes down to common bloddy sense. This country and it's stupid laws piss me off.

And as for you Nelson .. Get a life mate ... unbelievable ... Macho my arse!!!

I thought about getting a swarm of bees.

There's no predicting / arguing with bees!

Unless you have a can of Lynx and a lighter!

LOL ... you don't want to be buggering about with them mate ...

Lynx and lighter are defo needed. Not that I have anything against bees or any other creatures on this planet .. apart from man maybe.

LOL .. Maybe you should get a hampster mate .. then again he may scar oppps (scare you) .. PMSL ..

Really pleased for ya Posidrive:)

Lets leave the poor animals out of it shall we. The most destructive thing on this planet is us!

As for the goverment and its stupid laws, don't get me started. We are getting more like the Yanks by the day with everything! It's seems the plan nowadays is to take someone to court and screw as much money outta them for the smallest of incidents!

I'm guessing the guy was after compensation for the "life threatening" injuries your dog had inflicted on him as well as having the poor dog destroyed?

Anyone here seen Demolition man with Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock?

Well I reckon thats the way the so called civilised world is heading. I don't know about anyone else but I still enjoy having sex with a women physically, not via a virtual reality machine! Coffee? No sorry, that might kill ya!

Sort it out someone!

Justin

Didn't mean to comment on your case Posidrive, and I respect the opinions above - good to have an open debate.

There are good owners (eg. Timmy has rotties) and lots of bad owners who DO buy a big dog for macho/defensive reasons. When I approached the house of a neighbour from hell after spraying water over my mum's washing and partly over her (she's 70 yrs old my mum !), the door was open with a barking alsation in the doorway ! (nasty coward methinks who has big dog for all the wrong reasons).

I'm potentially dangerous to ppl as I am very strong to the average person (not as big as Macca, but can pack a decent punch) but I'm more predictable than a dog; also dogs may be soft as shite with their owners, but will defend them against anyone, even ppl who don't mean to threaten their owners - Alsations are particularly defensive and possessive of their owners. Some breeds have been bred for fighting/strength/aggression.
