A mate of mine has just bought one of these things that plugs into the cigarette lighter, and he wants to tidy up the wiring and was asking about connecting it directly to the batttery:

Can you do this or is there voltage/current issues, anyone ever done this???

Cheers,

Rob

Probably would wire to a switched live rather than a permanent live. May want to stick an inline fuse on the feed as well..

all my toys and gizmos run off the stereo switched live (only on when the ignition is on), fuse hasnt gone pop yet!! and its in an nice easy location for stuff like GPS/Phone chargers/Speed trap gizmos etc...

excuse the total ignorance...I understand the concept of only when ignition is on but how do u tap into this power and where do u normally go..is it literally a power cable going into the stereo?

Easiest way is to identify the switched live with a multimeter then use a Scotch Lock connector to tap into this wire and connect your new gadget..

BTW - Scotch Lock connectors are sold by Halfords ;)

I`d check the working voltage of it first as some of these gizmos run at lower voltage. There maybe a resistor in the cigar plug, dont want to blow it, would you :(

scotch lock = total bodge IMO!

solder it in! nothing worse than finding a whole load of scotch locks behind a dash when your looking for electrical faults!

Totally agree here, total bodge!!! It's got to be proper crimped conections or soldering IMHO.

Wireing wise, take a look at this diagram, HERE , it's for a '92 import TT, but I beleive that it is pretty much standard(ish). But to re-cap, it should be the BLUE wire that is switched, although i sugest checking this just to make certain.

lol - I was trying to keep it simple. As I said, it's the "easiest" way IMO
