Just fitted adjustable top links and tension rods today, and new StopTech slotted disc rotors, and the last sodding bolt of the job, that holds the caliper onto the upright (Ok almost, the wheel still had to go on) stripped the thread in the caliper. It was nowhere near it's specified torque either so it wasn't me being a rock ape... :smw:

Anyone had this before, and if so, what did you do? Put a helicoil into the caliper? It's got a bolt and a very thin aerospace k-nut on it at the moment just to get it home. I don't want to cut a bigger thread in it cos then I'll have to drill the upright to a non-standard size...

Appart from that, it's like a different car now with adjustable coilovers all round and rose jointed front end! Really solid turn in. :hyper:

Oh bo****ks, didn't want to hear that... That'll be the last resort, another caliper wasn't in the budget. Think I'll try a helicoil insert first. Just as well the calipers are coming off anyway to do the braided brake hoses.

Helicoil on a major suspension/braking component? Not so sure I'd be that happy about doing that tbh. Another alternative would be to drill and tap with a parger bolt, although not too big as then there won't be that much material left around the hole....

Fookin hell andy I thought it was all about going faster - didnt think you were bothered about stopping,

Yeah I thought of the larger bolt but I didn't want to enlarge the hole on the suspension upright in case I want to fit non-standard calipers one day... We used to use helicoils on a lot of suspension and brake components when I worked at Lola, though they were ally./titanium so they needed it. I think the Nissan R91 LeMans car had helicoiled calipers too. Oh well, what's the worst that can happen?!!

Worst that could happen is that your brakes could fail, the calliper could fly off and go though a windscreen of a Z that I am driving, as you live in London thats hardly likely to happen so I wouldnt worry mate.

 There's no way I'd use a helicoil if there was an axial load on the thread, but as it's all a shear loading I'm happy. A lot of the big brake kits that use an alloy adapter have threaded inserts into the ally as well, again just a shear loading on the bolt shank. Anyway, can't afford a new caliper so that's that. The money's already set aside for an ecu! :hyper:

Hi Mate

I've just replaced my front calipers with some Brembo units of a Skyline so the guy that did it (Martyn) should still have them. I don't want anything for them so unless Martyn wants them for spare parts or something then they're yours.

Give him a call on 07979 375230

Mark

ps They have been painted blue (you can see in my rides section Markyb300)

Oh and he should still have the discs you can see in the rides section too......

Mark, you are a scholar and a gent! I would feel bad taking them for nothing though! I will give him a ring and see if he is going to need them. Where abouts are you in London? I'm in Maida Hill, off the Harrow Road. Thanks again mate, hope I can return the favour!

I'm in Surbiton in Surrey.

No worries about a price. They are no good to me now and you need one so that seems the sensible thing to do.

If we end up at the same meet somewhere then an orange juice on you......

Ok Mark, left a message with your mate Martyn. I'm away for a couple of weeks but I'm going to try and repair the damaged caliper when I get back, that way you will still have a complete set if anybody else needs it. If it's a non-starter then I know who to call!
