nzr supra

i am thinking of buying a supra old style (g reg) to do up and sell the car i am thinking of buying has a over heating problem it kicks steam out of back end all the time worse when it is hotter i thought that it would be the head gasket but a guy that i know who owns a garage said if it does it all the time it will probably be a cracked head or block which this would mean stay away just wondered what u guyz thought

and also is there a forum for the supra guys

Sounds like the head has cracked. This was the only weak spot on these old Supras.

If it was the gasket it would only blow steam when hot.

Yep.

Head Gasket is the common fault.

Give me a bell if you want any more help.

I wouldn't jump to the immediate conclusion that it's not head gasket. If the gasket is knackered between a waterway and a chamber then it'll steam as soon as the engine runs.

Not conclusive but it's quite feasible. And I believe it's fairly common on these.

Hi toger 13

I have owned 3 of these old shape Supra turbo's and the last one had this exact problem. There was a crack in the block and it also had a knackered water pump. You could see the crack and water was coming out quite a bit. As a temporary measure I had the water pump changed and used some of that block weld stuff you can buy. A bodge I know but it worked!!!. I watched this stuff work it's way out of the crack and harden. Stopped the leak and I did about 6000 miles like this before I sold it (being honest I made the new owner aware of what I had done). Cheap repair and I guess I was lucky. I would think a new block for a supra turbo would be easy enough to get but fairly pricey. I used a firm called toyota celica breakers for most of my used parts. I will dig out their number tonight for you. They are very helpful and sell most parts. I am sure they can give you an indication of how much a replacement would cost.

is the crack on the out side on this car there are no leaks on the out side it just kicks steam out of the exhaust

do u think it could be a head gasket or a crack in the head or block

thanks

The crack that was on my car was at the top of the block and was clearly visable. The block weld I used claims to be able to sort out both internal and external hairline cracks. I must say that my supra was not smoking out the exhaust, just leaking all the water out the crack. It does sound more likely that it is head gasket gone. Having said that my porsche 928 had a slight crack in one of the piston chambers and that made it pour white smoke out the exhaust. (as you can tell I have great luck with cars!!LOL). If it is just the head gasket this is not a major problem to get sorted. A hell of a lot cheaper than a new block anyway.

Hunted high and low at home for some of my old supra info last night and for that phone number with no luck. I will look up my factory over the weekend, it should be up there. I will let you know the number for that breakers and any other info I have.

Seez ya!
