im sorry sir, you've failed your MOT [arse]

Alright everyone. As i said b4 i just got my 90 turboz from the docks and only one light works. its the small round one on the left hand side. the two side lights and fogs work but only that one little one works on the main lights. i checked the fuses [located left side under the hood] and they seem ok.

all that welding halfords lights seems a bit too confusin 4 me. is there any chance i could buy some of any of u guys......please.....?

also ive got an mot fri - i know it wont pass [bugger] - due to lack of fog and lack of any front lights atall. i was wondering if there was anywhere around the midlands i could take the beast to have it checked out, jus for general diagnostics or whatever.

thanks guys - sorry im not very clued up to all the jargon yet.

ps. its sounds like a bloody tug boat with the big super drager, goin plop plop plop all the time.

Only the outer, circular lamps in each headlight block are your dipped headlights, the two rectangular lamps are your main beam. Try flashing the main beam, you might be pleasantly surprised! (Apologies if you already know or have tried this)

Re foglights, I'm probably wrong, but don't fogs only have to work to pass the MOT if they are fitted? There's probably some law that requires UK cars to have a rear foglight...

Raz

when i bought my import the guys at the dealers rigged up an under the rear bumper type fog light with a simple on/off switch, thus enabling a swift mot pass

when i get around to it i will be removing this unsightly item and rigging up two of the reverse light to act as fogs...

Robb

Yes there are some strange laws on MOT. Like you can fail your MOT if your spare wheel is, flat, wrong size, bald etc, but if you take the spare wheel out at MOT time, you can not fail for having no spare wheel.

Stuart

no, sadly when i put my beams on everythin goes off, even the one little round headlight on the left - poor little devil.

so, er, does anyone reckon i should just try and go for the mot anyway and hope it'll get by with no fog light????

but i still need some zx headlights and now i need two zx main beem lights aswell [arse]

and i really need some help with where to get them from???????????????

ps, i was crappin myself all the way home cos the front bodywork was rattlin - i think it might have been touchin the tyre or somethin - i got 235 on front and 255 on the back. its just that loads of screws have come out of the body stuff inisde the front wheel rims and the its hangin real close to the road, i cant even drive over a pooh without it runnin on the bumper.

If you need headlight bulbs quickly and dont want to modify UK bulbs check out www.piaa.co.uk the outer, circular lamp bulbs are product code H-39 which are the SUPER WHITE type, they are pricey at £23 each without delivery, But they are better than the standard crap(I'll post my pics of them over the weekend).

For the rectangular main beam bulbs you can pick these up in Halfords, again I got the Halford branded Super White type which are quite good.

Cheers,

Trev

Hiya Veilside!

I'm in the Midlands (Birmingham) together with JeffTT (Tamworth) and Matty (Coleshill). We're certainly no wizzards on these cars but have owned them long enough to know a thing or two about what can (and invariably will) go wrong. I'm sure Jeff and I could help you out with a few things but unfortunately I can't do it before Friday afternoon or Saturday. If you can move your MOT over to next week sometime then we could have a look over the weekend and see what we can do. I have one of those "under-the-rear-bumper" fog lights that I can wire up for you just untill you pass your MOT - not a difficult job. The dip/main beam lights is going to be slightly more difficult as UK spec bulbs won't fit the dip beams. Really do need to convert them or get them from PIAA (see Trey's post).

Anyway, let me know if I can help you out with anything (07044016586) and we'll get a date/time sorted.

Cheers mate!

Danny

PS - just to put your mind at ease, when switching from dip to main beam (i.e., when flashing the lights) the dip beams (little round lights) do go off. So the poor little bastard on your passenger side is actually doing what it is designed to do... wink.gif

Could be the dim/dip relay for the headlights causing the problem. Its located on the passenger side just behind the headlight in a plastic box - pull the lid and see if you can hear the relay working from main to dip etc wink.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Could be wrong here, but I think not, because I seem to remember that there are different relays for L & R headlights.

Unless the dim/dip relay triggers both main headlamp relays, rather than just turning off the dips ...

jesus! you guys are a helpful bunch.

well, er, i went out today and bought 4 453 headlight bulbs from halfords (£3.99 each) and a soldering kit and some wire and a load of spade thingys. so me and my mate are gonna have a go tonight i think.

i did move my mot back to next tuesday. so after i cock things up tonight ill probably be givin you guys a bell.

im gonna do an oil change on it too, the oil in the engine is at a good level but it looks really thin and rusty coloured. so i bought some mobil1 and a new oil filter - another fun job for the weekend.

ps. my mate has got an MR2 SUPERCHARGER and he keeps teasin me sayin he's gonna kick my ass at santa pod. he rekons ill be slow because its an auto - he reckons i wont be able to get the revs up before i knock it into gear. can anybody give me some facts or info so i can shut the idiot up!

cheers,

Ben

Hi Veilside,

you Dont have much to worry about against a supercharged MR2 (girlie car.) For a quick getaway put your foot on the brake, put the car into drive and bring the revs up to about 2500 while holding the car on the brake, then lift off the brake and put your foot down and blow aforementioned girlie car away.

Dont do this too often or you wont have a clutch left.

Regards,

Brian

Can I ask how many miles your Z has?

It's just that if it has 80k+, Mobile 1 can be a little too thin. I changed my oil last weekend and put in the Mobil motorsport 15W50. Better when oil is cold- slightly thicker than Mobil 1. JMO

its done about 40,000kilometres - not sure how accuarate that is though - its a 90 twin turbo, auto, and it is in real good condition - the interior looks as good as new, - so maybe the miles are genuine [or maybe its been round the clock more times than the second hand on big ben]

well anyway, im gonna have some fun this weeekend tryin to fit some all new headlights and change the oil.

keep it Veilside,

Ben
