My normally faultless 300zx cut out on Friday on my way home from work. Tried to start it but there appeared to be no fuel getting through (engine turned fine and farted a bit). Called out the RAC but 10 mins later tried it again and it fired up instantly. 5 miles down the road and it once again cut out. After leaving it for approx 10 mins it started again. RAC arrived and followed me for 40 miles with no problems whatsoever. Since Friday have done at least 100 miles but the bloody thing cut out again today. Same symptoms - leave it for a while and it will start. Have changed the IGN/COIL relay switches but it has since done it again. This is beginning to hack me off so if anyone can give me some advice or tips it would be much appreciated.

Sounds like a PTU problem. Have you done an ECU check?

You can try taking the PTU off and cleaning the connections.

Thanks for your reply. It's much appreciated.

Excuse my stupidity but what is a PTU? I did read another article by someone having a similar problem and the PTU was mentioned in this. Where is it situated?

Have got it booked into my local Nissan dealer for Thursday but I bet these buggers will charge me the earth. Saying that, I just want it fixed. Having to do 120 miles a day on a bloody motorbike starting from tomorrow is not going to be fun.

the PTU is a smallish black box located at the front of the engine bay, slightly to the driver side, and at a 45 degree angle. i think theres a lead coming from either side of it.

Thanks for your reply. It's much appreciated.

They will, if it needs replacing - the :xxx:

Plus they will replace it with the same part which will go wrong again :(

Best bet for replacement is to find a series 2 part either from somewhere here on the forum or from Courtesy Nissan, Texas.

IIRC Nippon UK charge around £250+vat for the part, but they cost less than half that from Courtesy for the new version which lasts.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Nissan will no doubt just plug in a conzult which should hopefully bring up the problem, but if it's intermittent it may not. If and once they diagnose it for you just get a quote for repair 1st and then check on the board here for replacement or repair rather than having them do the job right away.

PTU is very easy to replace and so is the CAS which allows the injectors to work, which it could also be ( the opposite side of the ptu, alloy round thing)

Let us know how you get on, but expect parts to be pricey new from nissan, but quite cheap from the breakers on this board. :)

cheers

You can repair the PTU in most cases.

Cut the back off, then you can see on one side (can't remember which) 2 small wires joined to a pad on the board, these are the main earth cables to the transistors.

Tug them with a pair of fine tweezers and see if they'll lift. If they will then clean the silicone gunk off, and resolder them using aluminium solder. It's quite difficult to get it to flux, but it does work.

I repaired mine 6 months ago and it's been fine since. I think Andy P has done a few as well.

Thanks for all your help and advice. Spoke with Luke in the Z Centre and he gave me some cracking advice. If the car stops pour some water on the PTU. If it starts immediately the PTU is at fault. It works. New PTU in place (series 2) and my car is running like a dream.

Great site and great advice.

Cheers
