Jets installed, but no extra boost?

Hi, I have just installed 1mm mig tips, and I have NO EXTRA boost. So I took off the pipes completly and of course it ran like a dog, but again no extra boost. This is the same car that I had the trouble with the ECU and a JWT chip. Any ideas please?

I'd bee looking for boost leaks then somewhere mate. But even with a leak you should be notising some kind of upping in boost. Take it your not in Saftey boost?

are you sure you have put them in the right pipes mate

OK, I did look to see what pipes, even though I thought I knew the ones. And yes, I did get the right ones, unles there are some looking exactly the same very very close to the right ones. The question needed asking, and I am sorry to say I got it right as if it was wrong that would be easy. Are there some pipes very close? Cant see form the link. Any more ideas? Someone said the actuators are tired, but its only done 53k miles and I imported it myself, ok nothings certain but the car is as you would expect at these miles. I also have a light rattle from the top end, if I blip the throtle up and down you can hear it around 1500 to 2000 rpm. Any ideas? does not sound seroius, (in fact it sounds just like an old Carpri 2.8I for those old enough to remember). I have had over two years of trouble free with the Z, now I am worried. Help!

And if it was the actuators wouldnt they work in the opposite way?? Ie more boost as they would be less able to push the waste gate open?

I am not in safety boost, my standard gauge was reading about half a line from max, and the after market one agreed with it. ie about 9.5psi. And it did not change one dot with the jets in.

Nope :) The air pressure is what pushes the actuator open, and that part of the mechanics can't get tired.. but what does get tired with age is the spring inside the actuator that holds the wastegate shut - so as time goes by it takes less and less pressure to overcome the spring..

For example - on my old Renault 5, you could pull the actuator hose entirely and only ever hit 14psi - the exhaust pressure pushed the wastegate open by itself after that..

Not sure that's your problem, though.. hmm.. still thinking on that one..

Sounds like you put them in the wrong pipes mate-yes there is some close by!

worth checking again!! ;) p.s the rattle is prob just lazy followers, shouldn't worry about that to much.

Really sorry to hi-jack this thread, but what is the purpose of this operation ??? Not being a smart arse, honest, just new to Zeds, as yanks are my forte. Genuine enquiry.

Putting a restriction in the two pipes from the turbos will make them spool to a higher psi = big grin on the drivers face.

Put mine in last w/end,but a bit small me thinks-I hit 18psi[and shat me pants!]so got the opposite problem to you!must sort that this w/end! :o

I "think" my rattle is piston slap, not lifters, I know that sound. I have just put on Mobile 1 0-40. Bought it some time ago and then read the Oilman thread, Mind you I am not sure what the "best oil" is even after reading it. Does a more suitable oil reduce engine noises? Dont get me worng its not bad, just there.

I will look tomorrow and see if I got the right pipes, to double check. The one on the drivers side goes to a tube going from left to right, towards the rear of the engine, and there is "Suck" on it. Aarron, I see your point re the actuators, but my boost did not change at all, so I agree with you in that I too dont feel its the actuators. Is there anything else in between the pipes and the turbos, I guess there must be but I dont know what.

Only the BCSV's (Boost Control Solenoid Valves - they bleed off a tiny amount of pressure to take you from 7psi to 9psi for standard boost levels - the pressure is bled from the actuator hose back into the low pressure side of the intake. or was it the high pressure side? back into the intake, anyway), and all they could be doing is increasing your boost (as you're at 9psi they seem to be working fine..)

Hmm.. I reckon you need to get one of the forum tech heads to have a look - if you'd pulled the actuator hoses then you should have been hitting fairly high psi numbers, even with the (large) leak that taking the hoses off would introduce

I'll ponder some more :)

On the piston slap - AFAIK a thicker oil won't reduce that at all if that is the case. I'd say 0W-40 is too thin personally, though I know a couple of members have run their car on it since new (Eric Lymon is one, I think.. memory is hazy though) and have no adverse effects (like smoke etc).

Could it be injector noise? Best way to localise it is with a long screwdriver - stick the pointy end on various bits of engine and the big end into your ear (not the other way around, we don't want any punctured eardrums now do we  ) Injectors tend to make a 'ticking' noise.. that or perhaps the VTC springs - they also tend to make a sort of rapid ticking/rattling noise..

Aaron, I think you have me confused with someone else ;)

I'm running Castol RS (10W60) from the day it was invented.

I personally have never used any oil thinner then 10W in a Zed, some experts even say to use 20W50 during the summer for upgraded VG30DETT's...I've never tried that though.

And to get back to the subject of this post....

The one on the drivers side goes to a tube going from left to right, towards the rear of the engine, and there is "Suck" on it

I think you have used the wrong hoses (as already suggested)

The actuator hoses are the hoses that run from the inner (closest to the radiator) pipes.

Another cause of not reaching full boost can be caused by a MASSIVE boostleak somewhere or one or both your recirc valves are broken (read: stay open)

Whoops, sorry Eric :) I knew it was someone from outside the UK and someone who knows a lot about Z's.. Yours is the only name that ever comes to mind for some reason. Argh, it's on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember who it was :)

Good suggestion on the recirc valves - but like you, I'm thinking it must be jets in the wrong hoses, hence my suggestion of getting a second pair of eyes on it :)

Mark - if you like, I could take a look at it for you, you're not that far away really..

Hey Aarron, CALL ME STUPID. I put them in the wrong hoses. Thanks for the offer though, maybe we can meet up some time anyway? So now I am running 12.90 PSI and I get some detting, and also a lot of wheelspin. I am going to vent the bumper behind the coolers, because I think its a good idea anyway really. Anything else come to mind? Thanks everyone. Hanging my head in shame....

Hey Mark, you're stupid :slap:  ;)

Easy mistake to make really - the Z does have about nine million pipes under the bonnet, afterall :)

Detting at 12.9 PSI sounds a bit off though - you're running a JWT ECU aren't you? Should make you safe for ~14psi so that sounds a bit odd (stock ECU can be pushed to ~12psi)

Venting the coolers is a good idea, as are bigger coolers - though you ought to be OK for 12/13psi with the setup you have assuming you've got the JWT in.

After that you start looking at big piles of cash ;) Although getting rid of the CATs, putting a free flowing exhaust on and (if you have one) gutting the preCAT are good ideas (with the risk of reduced turbo life, but that's been discussed to death I reckon :))

I'll try and get off my arse and come to a meet at some point as well, so might see you at one - although I'd be in a Toymota at the mo :)

It only dets slightly sometimes, and yes I am ruinning a JWT, remember I had all those probs with the fitting? I am not happy with the jets I fitted they are too big and I had to make them smaller. I intend on getting some nicer ones and then have a proper look/listen..... What town you in?

Vaguely remembered the JWT probs - looked up the thread though, now I remember..

Oops - just realised I hadn't re-set my location.. For my sins, I'm in Slough ;)

Hey Mantav8 did you ever get your wastegate prob fixed as i could have the same problem :(
