I know I know - a tow bar on a ZX?? What am I thinking!! But seriously, its my only car and I need to drag a couple of small trailers (DJ equipment or Go Kart).

Is it possible to fit a tow bar? Does any one know where to get one / have one for sale? I would like to try and fit it over the Xmas Break, so any help would be appreciated!!

Cheers

Mark

this is no joke m8 i was nearly in this situation when my dad told me to fuck off as he was no longer going to tow my boat up to the lakes any more luckily for me i managed to get a mooring up there. i have seen one on but i wouldn't know where you could get one done

check the green zx in the background...

So a z-towbar does exist...no idea where to get one though.

I have a strange feeling it's a standard Nissan 300 accessory. Try your local, I bet it aint cheap, but best to get the right one.

Oh year, a mate of mine got one that will detach easily so knowbody knows what your car does in it's spare time! (The make might be something like "bosal", it's on a WRX)

I have seen an article on one of the american pages were he modified the back bumper / numberplate so that the plate flipped up and he either had a snap on tow hitch or it was recessed into the bumper, cant remember which. If I can find it I'll post the link. He was towing his jet ski with it, and when he wasn't the car looked stock.

I have seen one on a Grey 300 local to me in Ongar, Essex. I will stop and ask next time I see it. It does spoil the look of the car and IMHO it would be worth the extra to get a hideaway one.

you can get a tow bar from international tow bars in Leeds thats where i got my tow bar from the zx is a bril towing car as well as a sports car cant find tel num i think i payed £150 aprox not definate though

I too have toyed with the idea of getting as towbar. I noticed in my local garage where the zed is serviced that you can get one for a Hyundai Coupe that is removable when not used.

Before you ask, no I have not joined the caravan club but I'm sick of riding my XR400 to races and back! A trailer would be a good idea. I thought about getting an extra car to tow bikes but maybe the occassional day looking like a knob with a towbar on the zed is a cheaper option!

  • 9 months later...

I saw an R34 with towing a trailer with his Caterham 7 on the back at Bedford Autodrome at the weekend. It made perfect sense as I crawled back into the 7 to drive it home for 2 hours after racing the chuffin thing all day.

Did any of you find out about a tow bar for the zed as it now makes more sense to me.

but if you look for a couple of posts on this thread by Geoff, he has posted a genuine Nissan Part Number and an image of the exploded view of the tow bar assembly, which includes removable tow ball

I have just spent the last 3 hrs taking the rear bumper off to measure up and work out how to 'construct' a towbar like the guy in US.

Took the oppotunity to Dinitrol everything while I was there - I hate sticky wax. lol

I'm drawing the tow bar up then I'm off to my metal supplier to get some stock.

I'll post details as to how I get on.

read what lol, i actually saw a towbar on a 97 300zx here in croydon (man oh man how could you do that to a car like this) and i think it was a factory fit, but dear i say it did not look to bad...(if it were fitted to my metro biggrin.gif)

i read a story somewhere of how a guy bought his Z and went to college, paid way by having a job, and mowing lawns, and pulled his lawnmower trailer with his 300z tt ........

Porker, it was great fun thrashing all the Porsche's at Bedford Autodrome at the weekend in my Caterham 7. It's particularly nice when they get blue flagged when your behind them and they are forced to move over or they get black flagged for being too bloody slow.

Crap german expensive rubbish.

My brotherinlaw is a towbar fitter. The company is called THE TOWBARMAN. Offices in Northants and Farnborough Hants(south)> They fitted mainly Witter(Best) or Brinks or A1

Success!

It all works, just been down the tip!

Takes 2 mins to take off the ball, the plug I have put on a magnetic base on so it can be hidden out of sight when not in use.

When the ball's removed you cannot tell that there is any tow gear.

Tim

can you post a pic, im interested to see th eoutcome of this one, cause then DUFFMAN can get of his arse and fit one so we can take the boat to the lake biggrin.gif

Will do Warren, it's dark now so I'll do it tomorrow Am.

You asked for it... biggrin.gif

1. Bar removed

2. Number plate hinged to reveal 'female' socket.

3. Bar extension and electrics, n.b. magnet (from old speaker) on the mounting plate.

4. Bar extension in place

5. Close up of bar extension in place.

300zxtowbar.jpg

Total cost, inc, electrics and tow ball = £50.

I can give measurements if anyone is seriously interested in doing this, just email me.

That's brilliant! Would you be interested in doing it to members cars for a profit?

Simon P

Simon,

Is yours a UK or J'Spec car?

I havent even thought if this will work on a UK car as the no. plate is obviously higher.

I've got a couple of refinements I'd like to make, but when they're done I don't see a problem with either supplying all the bits with instructions or fitting it to other 300s, depends on interest.

Tim

Definitely interested in this.

Hmm, if only I could get this done before the track day at Kemble on the 10th it would save taking the van + driver as well
