How far in advance can you post date an mot if you have the previous years one available, is it 1 week or 2?

while we're on the subject, are reverse lights law??

My mrs reckons theyre not and i told her as far as i know that eveything you have on the car must work, so if it has reverse lights they must work, like wise with something like front fogs.

Reverse lights usually dont get checked during an MOT but it is down to the tester.

I am pretty sure that it can fail on a faulty reverse light. If it can fail on a side light which are at best useless, I am sure that a more important reverse light is on the MOT testing.

I believe any lights attached to the vehicle have to be working properly, so although not part of the standard test, if they're there and not working, the tester can fail the car at his discretion.

nope, as shunter said - reversing lights & front fogs are not testable items & are therefore not failable items.

and yes, 1 month with old ticket presented at time of test :)

It would be good if we could make a page of the MOT checks and the requirements for each check.

Illegal spare in boot, fail, no spare in the boot, pass. probably....

again i think Paul C will confirm m8

a spare is NOTHING to do with an mot, whether there or not

as you say if it's not there it makes no difference, so can't be part of an mot if it is;)

Paul C is right neither front fog lights or reverse lights are testable items and dont get checked during the MOT. But if fitted they should work or you may end up with a little ticket of some nice gentlemen in peaked caps (C&U requirements dont quite match up with MOT requirements)

An MOT certificate can only be issued with an expiry date of up to 13 Months after the issue date, but to be issued requires the production of the current certificate a photo copy wont do. the other thing to watch is that if you take your car for an MOTwith more than a month left on the current certificate you will only be issued a 12 month certificate! So make sure theres less than a month on it !!!!!! :)

SSRAE A general breakdown of the MOT can be found here http://www.vosa.gov.uk/

along with some other info regards issue of certificates and complaints procedures but its not really that indepth and to run a page listing all the requirements would take forever (theres quite a lot in the testers manual) Paul C seems quite a clued up guy i'm guessing he's in the trade so you should just ask him lol ;). nothing like passing the buck!!!

Joking asside just post any MOT questions in the help forum. As I'm sort of errmmm in the buisness I'll try and answer as soon as i can.

feck started typing the reply then had to answer the phone by the time i posted there's another three posts

Spare tyre is not part of the test

nah mate, im the same as most others on here - an IT bod who thinks he knows everything there is to know about cars :x: :D

(only joking, I run a Mercedes Workshop & am a MOT Quality Controller so dont ask me any stupid IT questions [although having said that im also MCSE qualified!! :p] ;))

 so we both work along the same lines then only i dont have to run the workshop :hyper:
