Get a tin of spray elecrical cleaner, or wd40 spray inside barrel and key, that may cure it

put some 2 in 1 oil inside but made no differance.

If its an auto make sure its in park properly, give the stick a little nudge (may even hear a click from the ignition switch) I had this problem when I first picked up the car, spent about twenty minutes on the garage forecourt looking a right dick till I phoned the previous owner and he expained it... :slap:

...If none of the above work, you can try and remove the solinoid that holds connects to the little button. I had the same problem and couldnt remove my key from the ignition. I had to remove the solinoid to get the key out.

I get this now and then, all i have to do is push the locking bit inside the barrel with a small screwdriver. It loks like a little copper colourd bar about 4mm long, just above the button to unlock.

thanks for the advice, am using a little screwdriver at the moment to release the little lever in the barrel. This is ok at the moment, but does it mean i have to replace the barrel at some point or can this be fixed?
