Spent a few hours this evening lifting my zed onto axle stands and removing the alloys.

And what a faff it is lifting the car up, I couldn't use my decent trolley jack as it shifts the car as the jack raises - not what you want when stands are partly supporting it. In the end I used a small vertical one and the standard scissor jack as both lift the car straight up. It must be safe I guess but I'm paranoid about leaning on the car etc lol. Thanks to Ryan for the reassurance on the phone hehe

Having only used them before as a back up for a jack I was surprised at how... shite the system is really. It looks so precarious. On Saturday I will be removing the exhaust and decat pipe, this seems scary as fook being under the supported car with no wheels on!

Making things harder the garage it is in is pretty small - about a foot down one side 8/9inches down the other. I struggled to get the pass side front wheel out of the wheel arch

Please resist the temptation to retell stories of cars falling on peoples heads etc ;)

Cheers

Pete

Pitza Margerita springs to mind :( Get it up on house bricks Pete, you know it makes sense.

Don't worry too much m8

its like when you get on a ladder, at first your shittin it, and after a dosen or so climbs your flyin up.

p.s. I think I may have a hard hat somewhere.............. :x:

stick blocks or even the wheels under the sills, then if the car does come of the stands it gives you a little safety barrier

As a health and safety officer mate, I could tell you some horrible stories about cars falling on people, if you want? :)

Yeah I hate jacking the Z up, it doesn't respond well to trolley jacks!

Good luck Pete and FFS do be careful mate, thought of a Shrimp being crushed by a 1450 Kg weight of Z is not pretty. :D

put some tyres on rims (on their sides) underneath...not your best ones mind....that will give you an escape gap should you need it...:)

you realise Pete will be looking for his space saver to put under the car now don't you

Back tractor tyre more like! LMFAO :D

PMSL Ryan, I might have some old bicycle tyres somewhere :D I'll build a small wall under it with bricks I think ;)

Tell you what the spacesaver is useful for -

I forgot to loosen off the front wheel nuts before raising the car :xxx: but wedging rubber against rubber held the fronts enough to stop them turning.

PMSL Ryan, wedging rubber against rubber held my Y fronts enough to stop them turning.
I have heard you like a little Rubber on Rubber action Pete (Gimp style)

You make it sound like such a faff you big woman :nelson: ;)

Can't say I ever had much of a problem myself -

chock rear wheels, stick trolley jack under the front and jack on the crossmember - raise car.

stick axle stands under the front stand points, lower car onto stands.

stick trolley jack under rear and jack on the jacking point just in front of the diff - the car pivots on the front axle stands ;)

lower the back of the car onto the axle stands

job done..

If you're feeling particularily womanly then stick two tyres under the sills..

Pfft. Big bunch o' women ;)

:nelson: :nelson: :D

I'll admit it does feel safer if you use axle stands on the front and ramps at the back though ;)

Aaron I'm sure you're right but the car is pulled towards where the trolley jack is pointing, because the jack lifts in an arc.

Why wouldnt this pull the front axle stands over?

Just off to powder me nose :D

Well I dunno about your trolley jack, but mine's on wheels ;) The jack will roll forward a good 8-12" when it's lifting the car in preference to trying to pull 3000lb of car down off the stands..

Honest :)

I suppose if you have a garage floor like mine (rippled concrete) then the jack could get stuck - but the wheels on my 3tonne jack are huge so it's not so much of an issue (and I put carpet down anyway - although then you get massive carpet burns on your back sliding in and out (ooer!) - lino is better but doesn't absorb oil.. lol)

(then again, carpet absorbs it, and then squeezes it back out into your t-shirt.. guess how I know? ;) One of my shirts now *reeks* of old gearbox oil.. urgh. covers up the BO a treat though ;))

Aye mine doesnt want to move because of the ripples - good idea about the carpet

It also stops the stones & crap digging into your back ;) Ok so a crawler would be better, but some of us fat knackers can only just get under the car when we're on the floor

Which reminds me of some of the interesting conversations I've had with my neighbours when the only thing we can see of each other is our feet, mind sticking out from under a car

It sounds relatively easy and that's what I tried to do last time. My trolley jack just about fits under the front of the car, but it's tight enough that I can't move the bar up and down to raise the car...
