Hi all,

I just moved to UK (from Norway) and got myself a 1991 300zx tt, jap import. I'm getting to enjoy the car more and more every day, (just wish the wife would feel the same way).

As I opened the panel between the front lights to check the air filter, I see something I believe is a HKS induction kit (it has HKS printed on it)

Can I remove and wash this filter or do I need to replace it?

Also, there is an after-market Blitz boost gauge installed where the air vent in the driver's door used to be. However, there's no background light on it, which makes it pretty useless after the sun goes down. Does anyone recognize this gauge - is it supposed to be backlit? (I rather not take the door apart to check the wires before I actually know that it can be lit)

Cheers

Hi there and welcome to (a) the UK and (b) our forum!

Looking at the pictures you put up you most certainly have a HKS induction kit on your car. These types of filters are not meant to be cleaned because they will usually disintegrate and pass all sorts of rubbish into your airflow meter and engine's internals. You have a choice:

(a) buy a new replacement HKS foam filter (Chris @ GetGreddy can probably get one), or

(b) buy yourself a much better filter and replace the HKS one with an A'PEXi induction kit. These kits have far better filtration qualities and flow through rates than the HKS one (or indeed most other brands). If you are interested in buying one then let me know because I sell A'PEXi induction kits. Price is £100 + £5 postage.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the guage - sorry.

Good luck and let me know if you'd like an A'PEXi.

Cheers,

Danny

dont mean to be a spoilsport but you have to tell your insurer about the intake kit and they'll want some dosh for it - because of the extra power

Gauge should be backlit, you'll have to remove it to check, also, check to see if its been wired up.

As for the filter, Danny wont steer you wrong.

Welcome to the forum

I'd recommend getting an A'PEXi induction kit - I had an HKS one on my car when I got it and it sucked up a load of water and killed the MAF.

£105 for the A'PEXi now is a lot better than having to buy a replacement MAF and then having to buy the A'PEXi as well ;)

Hello all,

Thanks for swift and informative replies!

The A'PEXi is a quite clear winner in the induction kit test on

http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/

I'll check with the bank account and order one from you shortly, Danny.

As for the gauge, I guess there's no choice but pulling the door apart to see what can be done with the light.

As for the insurance... I think I'll keep it to myself. The car dealer claimed the car was unmodified, except for some extra gauges. I cannot declare mods that I don't know about, and I'm not a mechanic - it's not possible to know about mods that I haven't been told about. So I'll plead ignorance in case it becomes an issue. With 0 no claims bonus in the UK, a foreign drivers lincense, just moved to UK, and a imported car, most insurance companies wouldn't even talk to me and those that did charged me a fortune even if I'm 31 (1300 quid).

Dont want to sound negative, but if you have to make a claim, ignorance will not be any defence at all. They will void your insurance. Best to declare it.

Just my 2p worth.

Oh, and may i congratulate you on an excellent choice of car. :)
