Hi everyone

I've just searched through the site looking for this problem...no luck.

I checked the level of the water in the plactic tank (for the rad) on the pasengers side and there is what seems like clay at the bottom....

Anyone else got this prob?? Will it be in the rest of the cooling system and do I need to flush it?? The engine doesnt over heat though.

Thanks

Just a general build up of sludge :) Has the cambelt been done yet? If not thats an ideal time to flush the system. If it has, and you really want to flush it, you need the two metal rad pipes off the engine - if you don't, the thermostat won't open so you don't get any flow through the engine. Unless you have an aftermarket temp guage, you can't be sure your engine isn't running hotter than normal, it only starts to move above the centre when the engine is getting seriously hot ;) Up to you though, remember the saying "if it aint broke, don't fix it". And NO, that doesn't apply to cambelts before anyone asks  :D

Cheers Andy!

Are there any types of rad flushes I should, shouldnt use? Gonna give it a go at the weekend, along with cleaning the headlights.

Andrew

Nah just run a hose through it both ways. If you're takin the pipes off, replace the two rubber hoses behind the upper pipe. Also worth doin the thermostat while ur there :)

Halfords do a two pack flush, it is a pain in the ass, because you have to keep emptying/ refilling, but it does the job

You take them off in order to get flow through the engine - the thermostat is behind the lower one. You need to flush the rad too while its out...

Had a look for how to flush the rad...Cant find anything

I'm quite happy doing it on my Megane but dont wanna risk anything on my Zed. It runs hotter and I'm weary of the the tubs over heating.

Anyone know of any links that'll be of use to me, or anything to add to Andyduff's advice

Thanks in advance

Andrew

The way I do it:

I run the engine till warm, undo the bottom rad hose to empty the system close it again and quickly fill the system back up as per the instructions on the pack, but with water as warm as I can get it from the tap and run the engine again as per the instructions.

In this way, the thermostat should be open as you empty the system, and the warm water should either keep it open or drastically shorten the time till it opens again, meaning that you get the flush round the whole system as quickly as possible.

I run as per the instructions (believe 30 mins) and go through the whole thing again with the second bottle of the pack, which neautralises the flush agent. Run again as per instructions and repeat again with hot water and coolant.

Its probably not as good as taking the two pipes off, and you do burn your hands, but its not as much of a pain in the ass and you do the rad at the same time. And it seems to work for me :)

Unless you are reving the engine the tubs wont be spinning and so wont overheat
