his most important contribution in the public arena has to be having an open mind and broad vision when it comes to music; and a hatred of "manufactured"/shallow music. A man of integrity not frightened to follow his own instincts and promote/help new talent.

Gotta say this has really gutted me today :( IMO he basically shaped modern music today, gave it some variety. A real geniune character with a great passion for music and a lot of time for anyone...

TBH it has gutted me as well. He has helped to shape the world of music and it is a great loss.

 

Did you know he was also a insulin dependent diabetic? .. They don't tend to have long and fullfilling lives.

I remember listening to him on pirate radio in the sixties (that dates me!) - the Nice, the Doors, Beefheart, Incredible String Band, stuff you'd never heard of, but instantly wanted to go out and buy. He must have introduced SO many people to SO much good music over the years; he just kept seeking it out and giving it the airplay it merited, regardless of contemporary musical fashion and whatever crap was in the charts at the time. What with him and Cloughie, we've lost some truly great men recently.
