A word of warning to new zed buyers (very long and probably very boring, sorry)

I thort I would share my experience today in the hope that it may for warn other first time buyers and also that someone may be able to advise me on the problems I have encountered.

The car in question is a 92 UK spec TT with 100K and lots of history, all for the reasonable price of £4400.

Having shopped around for a while I decided that this was the one to go for, despite the 220 mile drive, the owner assured me the car was in excellent condition and that I would not be disappointed.

Left home at 7:45 and arrived at mid-day. The car was still in his garage and on him driving it out I was very impressed. Highly polished with near perfect 17” Venom alloys, new stainless steel scorpion exhaust and high rear spoiler, it looked and sounded lovely. That was the problem though; despite having pre-planned my full and comprehensive inspection of the car a little voice was telling me that I was going to take this car home.

After a brief walk round we went for the test drive he drove the car first, I remember running through my head, remember the turbo boost gauge and oil pressure gauge checks. I glanced at the dash and was pleased to see good oil pressure and the turbo gauge reading within guidelines. We the exchanged seats and I had a go. Wow this is great I thort and forgot all about accessing the condition of the car, just sat back and enjoyed the experience.

Shortly we arrived back and within minuets I was the proud owner of this dream car. First port of call was to fill up the tank so made for a garage. Got out at the pump a stopped to briefly admire my new toy. That’s when I noticed plumes of smoke coming from under the bonnet. I opened her up an had a good look around, not being very technical I scratched my head and looked for anything obvious, all seemed ok and I tried to convince myself that it was probably just some crap burning on the exhaust or something, still had good oil pressure so no need to panic.

Continued my journey with the first doubts starting to go through my head. The next thing was the hicas light came on, ok no problem I thort just needs topping up (I hope). The next on was rather weird, a constant rhythmic tapping from behind the dash, not the usual creaking but a definite tap. I decided to open the dash on getting home as this tapping was driving me mad. Since I had no handbook I had no idea how the air con worked so began pushing buttons, when I press the big red one (top left) the tapping stopped. When I switched the air con off or select auto the tapping started again, to make things worse I don’t think the air con is working properly as at a preset of 10 the air was not coming out any colder than the ambient temp, of course I may be operating it wrongly but perhaps the tapping and the lack of cold air are in some way connected.

About half way home after 100 miles the oil pressure started to full off, I took the first opportunity to pull into a service stop and take a look. The back of the car was covered in oil and looking underneath it seems that it had been blown along the length of the car and seemed to originate from the engine. I checked the engine compartment and noticed that the fromt was a bit oily but nothing major. On checking the dipstick I found the oil level was almost empty. I refilled the engine and continued the remainder of my journey very carefully.

I am still very pleased to own the car but am frustrated by the fact that I now have to pay out to get the faults sorted before I can use it.

I guess the moral of the story is to look very carefully before parting with your money, love at first sight and buying a car do not mix.

If you have stuck with me this far, I’m very impressed. Now for the tech bit:

Has anyone ever experienced the tapping noise I described connected (I think) with faulty air con?

The turbo boost gauge goes up to about 8, this is a bit low I know but I think they are original turbos, or is there a possible fault? The car certainly seem to pull well but as this is my first it’s had to be sure.

The engine idles very well when cold but feels slightly lumpy when warm. Only a minor problem but maybe needs looking at.

Are there any known problems with engine oil leaks that I may be able to repair myself?

Thanks for reading…

See you on the streets…………………………eventually.

Steve

oil leak, eughh

I dunno what the smoke is but that happened to us actually. First time we took it out, we gave it a nailing to the garage, topped it up and on coming back from the till my dad noticed smoke from under the hood. and every time after u take it out u can smell a burning smell from under the hood. But the oil is fine and nothing looks out of line so we take no notice.

The stock turbo gauge is not very acurate at all. So dont take that too seriously.

Sorry I dont know too much about anything else

Steve, glad to hear you've got a 300 - sorry to hear about the problems though.

1) When you say the big red button on the left - this sounds like the hazard light switch?!?!?

2) It is quite common to have to have the air-con re-gassed from time to time. This is probably why you don't have any colder than ambient temp from the vents.

3) If there was as much oil as you say, it shouldn't be too difficult to find from underneath the car. Sounds like the sump plug nut could be loose or the oil filter.

It sounds like the smoke may have been the oil burning on the exhaust. What colour was the smoke though??? White is water, blue is oil.

Where abouts are you btw???

CheerZ,

Andy

Thanks for the replies guys.

The red button I spoke of is on the left of the auto button and just below the hazard switch. It seems to boost the heater fans when pressed.

I agree that its probably needs re-gassing but that tapping noise sure is weird. I thort it could be a noisy fan and that could explain why it goes away when the fan speeds up but the noise remains even when the fan is turned off.

The smoke is defiantly blue, I hope your right about a loose filter or sump plug. Will buy a new jack tomorrow and check it out.

I am in North Weald Essex.

Thanks again.

Forgot to mention, The car had a new power steering pump fitter recently, any possible connection?

OK Steve. Tapping noise could be one of the flaps within the air ducts having a loose activator or something. When the fan is on full it blows the door shut....???

Blue smoke is deffo oil but if its coming from under the bonnet then at least its not internal!!! wink.gif

ONE WORD OF WARNING THOUGH - be VERY carefull whereabouts you jack the car up! You need to get the jack under one of the chassis beems and not the sills. I know this sounds so obvious but I think every Z at some point has had sill damage because of this. Another point is to get a suitable jack - the car weighs 1.5 tons wink.gif

If the power steering pump has been replaced then the hicas light should be just the fluid level. Otherwise if it only comes on after driving for 20mins or so on the motorway it will be the steering wheel being off centre.

CheerZ,

Andy

I think there's plenty of people in your area who will be able to help you out. If you're ever anywhere near Preston giZ a shout though biggrin.gif

Thanks andy

If I had to guess the source of the tapping I would have said behind the centre vent which would buck up your suggestion. Look easy enough to get open, will try tomorrow.

Dead simple to remove the facia steve. There is a cover plate just above the top din slot in the centre console - this will come off with a little persuation. There are two screws behind this. There are two more in the outer corners of the top vents. They are covered with little push in caps which again just pull out... If you check on http://www.twinturbo.net I'm sure there'll be some more detail on this....

Steve - Something similar happened to me when I bought mine but not as bad as what yours sounds.

However, after a 200 mile journey home a bit like you, all seemed ok but when I came out to go for another drive later, I left a fallout that covered half the street. Jesus did i shit myself. Turned out to be the seals on one of my turbos.

What oil did you use when you filled up?

I did an oil change today. I'm using Mobil1 Motorsport 15W 50. Not cheap but good for 100K+ engines. Up till today only my drivers side turbo smoked but after the oil change today, I got a puff from the near side turbo too.Hmmmmm.

It sounds like you are going to have to take it very very easy until you know exactly what the prob is.

If you have seriously leaking turbos then that could be the smoke prob but the engine smoke is - could be cylinder head gasket.(BIG MONEY)

When does the smoking occur? On start up? On tick over? When driving?

Try getting the engine warm and then revving up to 2500k and hold it till you see smoke coming out of the exhausts. If you have a scorpion like me, they do not cross over so depending on what side the blue smoke comes out of, will indicate which turbo will need looking at first.

Dont make the mistake of taking it to Nissan thinking that they will know straight away what it is because they probably wont have had one in the garage for 5 years.

Fortunately the exhaust is clear apart from a white puff on start-up. The oil is defiantly leaking externally and burning on the exhaust hence it only becomes apparent when exhaust gets hot. Strangely enough though it does not leave a puddle when parked leading me to think that the oil is leaking out under pressure.

As for the oil I used, I’m not sure but it was 15w 50 and a well-known brand. There was not a lot of choice so I went for the second most expensive flavour since I expected most of it to leak out before I got home.

Thanks

Steve

Shame you weren't closer, I would have come round and had a look with you - you know a bit of moral support.

I'm sure that there are some lads that way that could pop round.

I really hate to say this, but you could nip down to Maldon Essex to the SE open day tomorrow, someone there could maybe have a look for ya, or maybe top man Darren, he attends a regular meet on a sunday somewhere in your parts of england. Don't me misguided by no oil on driveway though, rubber undertray soaks up alot of any oil that may leak, my guess i'm afraid is leaking turbo seal or oil feed, worth getting a leak down test done, only takes 40mins or so, don't be disheartend though i had similar thing couple of years ago, but it's worth it. Smithy

The smoking sounds to me like the turbo oil seals - mine are on the way out and I get loads of oil under/down the side of the car after a long fast drive and no dripping when standing. Also smoke really bad when cooling down after a blast. Think this is a case of reconditioning the turbos (lots of cash) but if it's not too bad then just live with it if it's running OK.

Air con sounds like the later manual type? Not the fully auto electronic version? Not sure what year this came in. Check it is not set to Economy mode as this just uses ambient temp air instead of the compressor.

Not sure on the turbo gauge readings for UK spec.

I've never worked out the oil pressure gauge as it seems to vary all over the place depending on oil temp, driving style etc.

Try pushing the coil pack connectors down firmly for the rough running and general stuff like checking filters and sensor connectors etc.
