Power loss - what power??!!

Hi all, any diesel experts among us please?

I have a Nissan vanette '98 2.3 diesel. It's a total slug but serviced regularly and drives well apart from every now and then, say about once every 5-10 miles it loses power and wont pull and chucks black smoke out the zorst. Anyone have any ideas what it might be, dont really want to take it to nissan dealer!

Thanks,

Thinks you`ve got pump trouble mate. Need to know if it has a rotary pump or a inline pump.

ive got a cabstar which had the same problem dude --check these in this order of cost, air filter aint blocked or got some shite in there---fuel filter water trap (unscrew the trap underneath it and if it contains water it will drain first before the diesel cos the fuel will be floating on top)---then iff thats fine change the fuel filter---then upto the injectors, make sure they dont need cleaning or the are breaking at the correct pressure (internal spring)---then the pump, this is the most costly hence the last thing to check.-----by the way mine was the pump(basted) £40 from a breaker.

good luck dude------brian93tt
