Any common water leaks 2 look for?

Losing about a pint of coolant overnight.

Can't see anything dripping with it getting dark early now.

Any ideas?

Are you sure you're losing it overnight? More likely you're losing it while hot..

I'm afraid there are a million small water hoses around the block feeding the turbos, heater, throttle bodies..

One of mine went recently.. Having to remove the upper inlet manifold to gain access to change it.. What a pain..

There is also two common ones that seem to fail, They are behind the timing cover and are a real pig to get to!!!

And the dreaded water pump. Mine went slowly and gracefully, over a few days. Danny told me that his went in style and made a big mess.

After a couple of hours driving the water has dropped and the car starts to overheat. No sign of sludge in the oil after filling the radiator 3 or 4 times now so i'm assuming it's leaking out. If I top the car up, by the morning about a pint has gone. Can't see anything dripping if I let the car idle up to temparature.

Could it be something else?

Recently fitted JWT ECU & boost upgrade.

Can't see any loose pipes I might have dislodged.

60000 Service is due right now and i think the water pump is part of that?

Just need some cash frown.gif

Chris DO NOT LET IT OVERHEAT!!!If the needle starts to creep up STOP! As the repair bill

I watch the gauge like a hawk and never let it run hot for longer than it takes to pull over. This is such a pain as I can't track it down.

Are many water pipes visible from underneath?

I don't have any way of getting under the car other than the crappy Z jack which I don't trust. May just have to wait until I can afford the 60K service and get it checked out along with the growing list of niggly faults. Luckily it's a second car so I don't have to use it all the time.

DO NOT GET UNDER THE CAR UNLESS IT'S ON AXLE STANDS.

I know of someones dad who was killed when a jack collapsed - just don't do it.

Hmmmm, one of my brothers mates died from a fault hydraulic jack...it had air in it, and the jack just suddenly lowered itself! Nasty. frown.gif

And....this taxi driver I was chatting too had his pelvis, hip, and thigh broken by a faulty engine hoist - the hydraulic bit gave up when he was hoisting his V6 block out of his boat, and it fell on his hip - Ouch.

BTW, the Nissan temperature gauge system is CRAP....If your system was to be completely drained of coolant, it takes a while for it to even register on the gauge (since there's no coolant to alter its reading), by which time you'd have fried your engine!

(What we all really need is a temperature sensor on the block...)

Anyway, enough of this doom and gloom....

this has turned all nice, in the army we had a battery explode under a casper (a kind of tank) and it flipped it onto its side and squashed two guys standing on the other side ;( really gross.

anyway check your radiater cap. it could be faulty.

I've replaced the radiator cap just in case. It was only a few months old but the seals were looking a bit perished. The water seems to be really rusty coloured... Is this just because the car has been standing with a half empty radiator regularly? Thought about taking the plug out the other side and flushing it all out with a hose pipe?

What's the best way to get all the air out of the system as it seems to take for ever to top up and get all the bubbles out??

Not sure on the best way of flushing all the crap out Chris, ask Aaron wink.gif he has been thru that adventure!

But when you got the coolant sorted, try some Redline Water Wetter, £19.99 a bottle and helps with cooling, I'll get the address and telephone number for Delta-Oils in Lincolnshire if you like, they do free delivery. I get my oil from them, they are the European Distributor for all Redline stuff and top blokes.

It would seem that the IMOC (MR2 mob) get a 20% discount - maybe we should too ...

Chris get all that shite out your system.

Use only Nissan antifreeze, about 2 litres will do it the rest water.Fill up the rad to the top,fit the rad cap then start engine until warm.Slowly

unscrew the plastic screw to the left hand side of the rad,and you will see all the air escaping'when the bubbles stop tighten the screw back down.Repeat the above until you can see no more bubbles. This can take 20min to get all the air out!!! biggrin.gif

Thanks guys.

I'm hoping it was just another faulty rad cap and masses of air still in the system that's making it look like the level has dropped. I've been in a bit of a rush every time i've topped it up so maybe spend some time at the weekend.

Presume the Redline stuff is happy with most antifreeze?

After about 2 hours driving today it overheated after stopping. This time I spotted that after parking up the water started to boil and steam was jetting out from beneath the top left radiator rubber hose that goes to the water temp sensors. Water was pouring from under the car beneath that point but I couldn't actually see where it was coming from - a bit too hot to stick my fingers in so i've ordered a new rubber hose anyway.

£38.00 from Nissan seems a con as usual for 6 inches of pipe... Is this likely to be the cause or the result of something else?

Explains why the coolant has gone overnight - it's not boiling until I turn the engine off.

Chris I can sell you a new nissan hose for £20 email me with your details if you want it.

Chris, this sounds like a problem i had with my old Astra.

Ok, bit of difference here (Astra: High pressure cooling system vs Nissan low pressure system). But...it boils when the engine is switched off becuase the water stops moving! So that proves your water pump is working, to some degree at least.

I'm concerned about the rusty coloured water (this is the same colour as the astra had!) - What you need is a damn good system flush and perhaps a new rad - its probably clagged up with loads of shite

And refill with the nice green (slimey) coolant fluid, this will prevent further rusting. Also the coolant raises the boiling point of the water.

To cut a long story short, once the system has some new water in (from you pouring in fresh water), the oxygen in the water will cause MORE rust to appear - catch 22! Its really difficult to reverse the affects. But rad / system clean, and the correct amount of coolant should solve your problem.

Thanks chaps.

MAC1 I already ordered and paid for the hose else I would have had that one from you.

I'm going to totally flush out the radiator at the weekend, fit the hose and refill with coolant. Hope that sorts it.

Fitted the hose and filled up.

Got back from a drive and water still dripping so took it down to the local Kwik Fit for a check on their ramps.

The radiator is split in the bottom right between the plastic casing and the cores.

Bugger!
