Mind if I vent a bit of anger?

When we bought our Vectra SRi about a year ago it had just had its full cambelt service costing £500odd to the prev owner. Nice.

6 months later the water pump leaks water everywhere, it wasn't changed with the cambelt service  Cambelt off and cost £200odd to us.

The "engine electrics light" came on the other day, car went into a safety mode and wouldn't rev v high and cut off a couple of times. Restarted fine though.

Its just gone into Vauxhall and (for £60 :xxx: ) they hooked it up to their diagnostic (ie Vauxhall ConZult) which said the camshaft sensor is dicky. Result, cambelt off and £165 - arghhh! Although they did say they wont charge the £60 they worked so hard for.

Bloody Vauxhalls :xxx:

Thanks for listening ;)

Yeah I was thinking about getting a Vectra but after reading some of the owners comments on http://www.carsurvey.org I decided against it.

My Bro bought a CDX recently to flog on and ended up having to have a knock sensor replaced which cost 160 squids. Didn't realise that an N/A car would even have a knock sensor but there you go.

TBH It has done nearly 140,000 miles  The FVSH is amazing though - it was a lease car, so no expense spared on parts/service.

Yeah may have FVSH bud but they are as bad if not worse than Nissan when it comes to problems and servicing and they're not as cheap as you'd think either!!! Mind you that could and should apply to most main dealers I'd have thought.

I read somewhere a while back that Toyota service technicians are paid on a kinda bonus scheme. If you book your car in with a problem they will have to finish routine maintenance and servicing on newer cars for the day before they will look at yours. Hence why my Mister2 was in for two weeks getting the slave cylinder replaced as they were having trouble bleeding the system.

Yeah I heard that about Vauxhalls too, didn't stop us buying it though :D It is a really nice car, v quick for an estate and with the TC on you can get great oversteer on roundabouts

I might add up the receipts some time, it would dwarfs Maccas lol, maybe not.

My pie bill maybe, but NO WAY my fookin Z PMSL

Anyway stay away from Vauxballs and stick with a cheap and trustworthy Ford;)

Was it a v6 pete? They are the worst, absolute shite.

I had one for 2mths, cost me over £500 in repairs. That was

an ex-reps car with a service history as long as your arm too.

Had 120k on the clock. just couldn't go anywhere for fear

of breaking down!

Anyone thinking of buying a vectra, dont do it....they're cheap,

but theres a reason for that! Mondeo 1.8 is a good all rounder...

so i've been told.

  • Author

LOL I've got a Mondeo 1.8 - highly recommended  The Vectra belongs to the Mrs. Its the 2.0litre 140SRi.

lol, nice one pete. I did actually like the 'layout' of the

vectra, nice interior etc..... I asked the mechanic who looks after

my z whether the 1.8 vectra was any good (never another v6 sri),

he replied ''they are all shite, the most slated car in the industry!''

Told me to get a mondeo 1.8. He also said to stay away from rovers. :)

So it'll be a mundaneo for my daily driver!

Yeaa I picked mine up for £800 just over a year ago, failed its first MOT because of its headlight pattern  lol but nothing ever wrong since, and I really cane it around lol. Easy to service, predictable handling and dont mind being thrashed. Oh and the boots mahoosive :D

The Vectra does have a nice dash and some v fancy gubbins, the trip computer telling you how many miles are left in the tank is the most useful thing ever! :) Feels like its on rails too. Just the reliability and the cost of parts and service whioch let it down. Was gonna do a grounding kit for it but have you seen the battery negative  Its like M6 Junction 6 lol

Thats not just the battery thats negative pete, its the whole car! ;)

D'ya do any other g'kits then? Howabout a ford transit 2.5 diesel, '97..

p-reg?

I used to drive Vauxhalls when I passed my test back in 1987, couple of Cav SRi's (which were pretty good cars back then), an Astra GTE and a couple of Mantas. Probably wouldn't get another now though.....

I got my first Japanese car in 1993 - a 6 month old Carina EGTi. Cracking saloon car - 173bhp, Celica suspension. Fast and ultra reliable - had it 4 years, from 6K miles to 126K miles and it NEVER went wrong. I just had it serviced every 6K and had the cam belt changes. I even paid to extend the Toyota warranty to 100K miles, waste of money as I never needed it

Had Japanese cars since......except the Corsa 1.4 16v Sport I bought Julia 3-odd years ago, Nice engine but it costs more to service than my ZX

Plus the power steering only works when it feels like it - it's a W reg FFS and we've only just racked up 42K miles

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Now, being a bit of a ''vauxhall man'' :x: I should argue the case on this thread-but I can't! vectra's never did ''do it'' for me,but earlier models[astra, cavalier, manta etc] I never had any probs with.Worst vauxhall model ever?-That will be the Omega IMO! -utter pants!!!! :

To be fair i've had a number of vauxhalls and never had any probs, having said that, i sold my Z and have now got a vectra but i'm looking for another Z at the moment cos the veccy is just an A-B car with no :D factor............ Anyway i think youv'e been had, you don't need to remove the cambelt to do the cam or crank sensors and you can flash up the fault codes yourself with a paperclip. SEE http://www.topbuzz1.carenthusiasts.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm

Baz - argh! I needed that this morning lol :p Having now got the invoice the labour charge was £68 so they cant have removed the cambelt, dispite what they said on the phone.

Didn't realise that an N/A car would even have a knock sensor but there you go.

Mine has...

It's more to do with compression ratio than aspiration I should think.

My main objection to Vauxhalls is that they are the only car ever with worse steering feel than Audis.

Heh heh,

That takes some doing, but having driven a Vectra I have to agree :p
