Buying a 300zx

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a used 300zx soon. Looking for some pointers.

My current concern is that used car book says the the manual boxes tend to shred. Is this crap or are the manuals okay ? Nothing in the Z-buying guide to suggesting this ?

Thanks in advance

Come on guys get serious!

Starbuck, I havent had my car very long, only about 3 months so haven't emassed a great deal of knowledge yet, although having said that the knowledge on this group is huge - if they can be serious for a moment smile.gif

Have a scan through the previous threads, buying a 300 has been covered quite extensively and recently.

There are really two main, initial considerations:

Auto or manual

UK Car or Import (assuming you're in the UK)

Have a scan and post back any queeries you have.

Good luck

Starbuck - your chances of getting decent advice are limited (at least TT Tim was serious) because people on here are more concerned with arsing about and going on about auto vs. manual all the bl00dy time.

Right rant over. Advice time;

On hard driven cars the synchromesh on 2nd and 4th gear can often wear - easily checked when you check the car over. However, light grinding can often be fixed by changing to Redline MT-90 gear oil, or Redline MTL if the grinding is significantly worse. Although there is the potential for more wear on the synchros with MTL (it's more harsh than MT-90).

Once you reach Stage 4 in power upgrades (somewhere in the 400bhp region most likely) you'll find your clutch won't last very long - could well start going as early as Stage 3 depending on how hard you drive, how hard you launch and the miles you do.

Other than that, good gearboxes.

Auto's;

Turbos have a different A/R ratio, to produce a different power band - more suited to the auto box (i.e. it starts lower down). Contrary to popular belief, I believe all UK & Jap cars are 280bhp - only the yanks got a 300bhp Manual & 280bhp Auto. (All Jap cars are limited to 280bhp BTW, tis the law over there).

Early boxes (89 & 90) are reported to have more problems - basically they have a tendency to cook themselves. Check the box *well* (drive it hard, check shifting etc), if it's OK - get an auxilliary ATF oil cooler fitted. Should safeguard against future problems.

Also important to check the condition of the turbos (smoking), and general cleanliness of the car, and how well it has been looked after.

Hope that helps.

There is a buyers guide in the Tech Sec over to your left.

Well I guess I just dont fit in here then.. I mean, the guy asked for advice and all everyone wanted to do was start another auto vs. manual debate?

I must say that I agree with Aaron on this one, lets face it I was the first to try and pull the thread back to a serious note.

If it was me posting for the first tim I would have thought bunch of tossers.

I don't want to start a war, we want to encourage new members not alienate them.

Shall we pretend this didn't happen?

I will not post again about this biggrin.gif

Friends?

I agree with aaron too, it's quite boring seeing you lot bang on about the same old crap all the time why don't you save it for your own personal e-mail and let us lot try to help each other out with Zed ownership.

EVERYONE fits in here.

I love the auto / manual debate everytime it rears its repetetive ass.

Always cracks me up the way folks who look for manual cars for ages and then give up and get an auto try to justify their choice.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the info. I've found myself a 94 Twin Turbo UK car, with low mileage, FNSH, no mods. I'm going to try to get a drive at the weekend. I'll take along the z buying guide from this site.

Starbuck, hopefully you'll get a decent one, as opposed to a lemon, but if there are any problems with it then someone on here will be able to help you out.

It may be worth taking someone from the forum along with you when you go and look at the car.

Apologies by the way if you already know a lot about Zeds biggrin.gif

nice one, just look out for the normal things and if it feels right go with it, good year to own a 300zx by the way.

(meaning 94 models were good)

look for probs then find out what they are and if its worth fixing.

oh and yes i do agree wiht arron on this thread, i mean really guys
