My 90 swb TT absolutely stinks when its running. A bit like rotten eggs.

It was imported 4 weeks ago. I've been advised that it's the Jap fuel. (surely the japs don't accept stinky running?) I also read that it could be the cats.

I put fresh Optimax in it - though there is still some jap fuel there too. But it still stinks. No smoke, runs smooth.

Any ideas as to what could cause it?

Thanks

Leonard

can be a sign of cats m8 and unburnt fuel i think, not an expert in that field though

DEFFO could be fuel, as mine had a similar smell when i first bought it (straight from japan) and used unleaded at first, changed to otimax, and within a few days had gone

and hasn't appeared since, actually its more likely to be uk fuel thats causing it, as jap' fuel has a higher octane, so hopefully when your tank is ALL optimax it will clear ;)

I get an eggy smell when I give my car YEHAAAAAAAAAAAA then it goes away. Mine's a UK 300.

cheers John Crisp

If it's an eggy smell then it's bound to be something to do with sulphur in the fuel. UK fuel has less sulphur these days so just thrash the car around on Optimax for a couple of weeks and I'm sure most of the smell will go away, certainly when the car is hot anyway. Better still, get de-cat pipes.

I need to either repair or replace one of the front pipes which is leaking (rusty) at the hanger anyway so I might just go for decatting with straight through pipes.

No... I dont think you can bud ... Then again you could and replace for MOT

Mine is a late 93 as well ...

Re smelly fumes: check your ecu for error codes,a bad connection to the water temp sensor will cause the engine to run rich, wasting fuel and making lots of smell!
