Vibrations or grinding noises?

Folks, I'm trying to locate a noise on the drivetrain of my car.

 

It tends to get a little noisy at speed and I don't notice it when I pull away and it doesn't seem to be load related.

 

I seem to remember a list of possible noises and what it could mean. Can anyone enlighten me.

 

I've had a bearing doen thinking this was the case but it's still there.

 

Any ideas?

It's very difficult to tell craig but the noise is more apparent at speed. What will it sound like if the bearing goes in the prop shaft (if there is one)?

 

I guess i would describe it as a constant drone at speed.

a constant drone that increases with speed could be the diff, had that on other cars before, faster you go, luder it gets frown.gif

 

not sure if the centre bearing would generate noise if worn, mine just caused vibration

 

i guess you need to try and locate the position better, take the back seats out and take someone for a drive in the back..

If it's speed related then it must be post-gearbox. This suggests :

 

1) Propshaft

2) Diff

3) Wheel bearings

4) Brake rub

5) Tyre (had a weird noise for ages which turned out to be a soft pebbly thing in the tyre tread make a really off noise!)

6) May sound stupid but wind noise. Check for any loose trim or something sticking out a bit. It can make a sound totally different to what you'd expect !

Hi Simon!

My previous Shed of Dread Zed™ had this 'Drone'

What I will say is that the previous owner (i called him) said that he had spent £300 sorting out the center bearing on the prop only to still have the droning noise continue (between 70mph and 90mph it was).

It does tend to vibrate also if the problem lies within the propshaft.

Dont know if this helps, s'just I wouldn't want anyone to waste £300 getting the prop sorted if it was elsewhere (which it probably is if it isn't vibrating)

Check the exhaust hangers, it could be something as simple as that knocking or rubbing somewhere. Jeff TT

Thanks for the advice chaps but I have had a diff go on a car before (Spitfire and no sniggering at the back!!!!)

 

If I can eliminate the gearbox then I'm inclined to blame the diff or half shafts.

 

The trouble is I don't trust tha car anymore. A seized diff at high speed?!

 

Still she is 11 years old and I have done one or 2 too many wheel spins at stage 3.

 

Sigh, get the wallet out again!
