all depends on how much, i'm on a tight budget LOL

Lol :) Aren't we all? Well, apart from Macca ;)

I asked because it's something I want to try and do myself as well - the car (when/if I ever get around to fixing it again) needs some rust taking out of the arches (assuming it hasn't rusted through since last time I looked!) and a new boot lid (the current one is rotten all the way through in the corners under the spoiler).. Me, being a tightar*e, and always wanting to learn new things, want to do it myself :)

I'll have to see if I can persaude a friend of mine to get her sprayer friend to teach me I think ;)

Anyway - looking good so far :)

Theres no real trick to spraying well, apart from having the right equipment, and having a practice first on something you dont need anymore!

While keeping the same distance from the object to spray, move your body, while keeping you arm fixed in position - walk along the car at a slow pace while spraying in straight lines, overlapping slightly each pass.

By keeping your arm fixed and walking you then keep the distance of the spray gun relative to the surface all the time and you get an even coat of paint.

Like I said, practice first on a skip or a wall or something!!!

With the right spray gun, which creates a fan of paint, rather than a ball of paint, its not a difficult as it sounds, you cant compare it to aerosol stuff as its far superior. Unless you can find aerosols that spay in a fan pattern

You make it sound so easy Bilky ;) I suppose it's not rocket science is it, but still, everyone always tells you not to try it yourself so you get this impression that it must be really really hard :)

Mind - having watched a few of the shows on Disco H&L where you see the 'pros' do it, they are good.. Like doing pinstriping by hand (with a brush) on a (motor)bike frame and getting it perfect every time - now I bet that takes practice :)

I was planning on practicing on my Dad's van  He's got a bit of rust that needs knocking out before he sells it, and I figured it couldn't possibly look any worse than the rust does :D (Plus they have a nice big garage to practice in!)

For some reason, he didn't seem to keen on that  can't think why :)

paul, WTG mate  Respect to you, as i wouldn't try this myself.

But just one thing............................ get rid of that ugly hanging fog lamp :nelson: :x: ;)

i spray porsches for a living and i find your 'gudie to spraying' hilarious. its very insulting to see that people just have not learned that good skills are hard to find. i would say that 90% of professional sprayers out there are crap so how you hope to teach someone in a couple of sentences i dont know

can you share some of your knowledge with us in a couple of paragraphs then

i would say that 90% of professional sprayers out there are crap so how you hope to teach someone in a couple of sentences i dont know

That's the point though - if 90% of 'professional' sprayers are crap, why not try and learn yourself? Given some of the stuff I used to see come out of the bodyshop next door, I'd be surprised if I couldn't do as good given a few tries.. ;) But having said that, there's no way I'd be as good as the bodyshop the other side (a BMW place, rather than a general 'accident repair' place) - thing is, they took one look at the Z and said (after sucking air through teeth, of course) "Oooh, not the kind of thing we're set up to do. That'd cost a lot. We'd not be very cheap." All I wanted was a bit o' rust knocking out and the panel blowing in ffs! (Suppose a Nissan wasn't good enough for a BMW shop that does a lot of Porsches, Ferraris etc)

I know there are some fantastic sprayers out there though - you only have to watch stuff like the Great Biker Build-Offs to see the amazing work they can do, not only with a spray gun, but an airbrush too (or in one case, pinstriping by hand with a brush) - there's no way I'd ever be that good and I know it.. On the other hand, I can't afford to spend £10,000 on a paint job ;)

Anyway.. I'm losing the plot now :) Just wanted to say that I don't expect to be able to pick up a spray gun and get it right first time - but on the other hand I do imagine I could learn to be as good as a 'reasonable' sprayer (especially as I have a friend of a friend to teach me who is a good sprayer), but I know I'd never be as good as some of the truly amazing guys..

I had exactly this problem, went to all the "decent" places locally only one out of four would even consider taking the job on!! the others just didnt want to know and the quotes were fooking obscene! Sure there is a knack to it and it requires some skill and experience but rocket science it ain't... FG in nottingham sorted me out with a decent job and a bargain price. shame I had to send the car half way up the damn country to get it done...

Annoying isn't it.. I mean, I was prepared to pay good money for the job, but as soon as they start making air-sucking noises like that you know that whatever price they give you will be marked up by 300% to try and put you off.. rargh! ;)

another pic taken today

Looking good Paul - that's some serious overspray you have there though ;) Changing the exhaust, or just going to spend time getting it all off?

Red exhaust tips and red tyres, your setting a new trend there ! :p :D

I think I can still see the filled in lines in bumper, does it need filling and smoothing some more...or are my eyes playing tricks ?

i'm going to do all the tyres RED

its a slow process rubbing down filling rubbing down
