as prices are continually going down, does this mean the Zed will soon be concined to car graveyards ? :nelson:

does it look dated ? is it too heavy ? thirsty ? expensive to maintain ? :nelson:

Featured Replies

no - IMO :D

HERE HERE

I suspect they are a victim of their own poor success in the UK - ppl see old tatty ones and see how cheap they are - so this makes them less desirable by flash harry's who wanna make a statement - so prices go down - cycle continues.........

in a world of disposable 5-minute wonders, the 300ZX is too old ? despite the fact they are generally really well built and robust for a high performance motor, were developed by a massive research program in several countries, built on a special production lines etc. etc. - a record breaking design (to this day)........but still not a BMW/Porsche or even Toyota !! :nono:

Nelson mate, what's with all the doom and gloom posts about Z's (still not sold yours? ) I'd get onto the happy fags if I were you!! ;)

I wish I had the money to keep mine - I'd love to throw £10k or £20 at it and make it a road demon to beat most other cars. But I have a big mortgage and a 200SX to run and only earn just over £20k a year.

YES!

Wondered when you would stick yer oar in

;)

I would still have one if I wasn't so gay!!!

Yes Roy we know

I.......but still not a BMW/Porsche or even Toyota !! :nono:

Thank God for that - BMW Kraut boneshaker, Porsche Estate Agent yuppies, Toymota - well BigRoy, 'nuff said

Of course the Z hasn't had it's day :slap:

stick around long enough and all surviving motors go in and out of fashion....maybe the zed is between the 2....?

eg the 1970's 911's horrible colours...toilet blue and burnt gold with chequered interior...now classic's according to some

at least you all know now how the 240-280z guys felt when all the 300 bods came along....dont worry the 350z guys wont be half as snobby as they were

it's easy to think big engined cars in general are on the slide what with petrol prices and environment, but they seem more popular than ever as ppl have more disposable incomes and are willing to buy on HP. Top gear has shown and perhaps encouraged a love of big engines and power. As this country goes more like the USA, big cars seem to be part of the deal.

Maybe death of cars in general will happen, but not for 50, 100, 200 years ??

or maybe they'll evolve into solar-powered etc. electric thingys ??

it's hard 2 c how ppl wud get excited about an electric car tho'

something in us inherently loves power which cars deliver - take that away and many will miss it in a big way.........

Personally, i've had mine for about 2 months and it's a car i've admired for many years but have not been able to own due to the cost. Now I do own one, I love it to bits, it's the best car (with respect to performance and looks) that I've owned.

I don't think it looks at all dated, and it's much more attractive and stylish than the current crop of aggressive and Macho looking cars such as Scooby's, lancers, evo's etc.

If anything, as trends and fashions change, it's going to be cars such as those that will lose their appeal whereas the wide and 'drop nose' look of cars such as the 300Z's, Misubushi FTO's, Supra's and (dare i say) Ferrari's, Porche's, and Lambo's etc have a classic and timeless look.

This is all of course IMHO.

Steve

You may have a point about the 300 dieing out as a choice of car for every day driving, it is getting a bit long in the tooth for that (yup I know lots of people here use thiers every day but I'd hazard a guess that the number of every day cars is falling) remember about 15 years ago you would quite regularly see people driving to work in MGBs or triumph spitfires (or even a VW beetle)??? pretty rare now... not many are every day cars.

We have all seen the number of dogs for sale in the trader every week and slowly but surely the numbers will dwindle as more are binned or broken.

then all of a sudden we will all be driving around in a classic car!! :) could take a few years yet but the z32 has the right pedigree to become a proper "affordable" classic (IMHO unlike the Z31 and a lot of other 80's cars which I dont think will ever make the grade)

Im fairly certain a good 240 would get the same or possibly more money than most of our cars if sold now...

all IMHO of course :)

I think what's a little odd about the Zed is that despite it's age it hasn't become a technical dinosaur; and is even a better drivers car than most new cars.

More money and time went into it's design than is likely to go into most newer cars, except for the most exotic designs/marques. It was ahead of its time and a really good design - but never got credit from this by the UK public. It's "successor" is not as good in many respects. How often does a record-breaking design get discontinued so quickly and largely ignored by most ppl for no logical reason ? It's combination of speed and comfort is rare, even when compared with much more expensive marques.

A similar thing predominates UK CD sales - IMO and I've heard it from many other ppl, the UK record-buying public are largely tone deaf !!

Have a good weekend !........

People buy Porsche Cayennes which are heavier, more expensive to maintain and uuuuggglllyyy!

saw one on the m3 yesterday, last three characters in the number plate were ..... wait for it.... POO :)

Yeh, and those crappy coulour are slowly returning to modern cars now.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

The ZX is still pretty much a timeless classic owing to the clean wedge shape that apes Italian exotica.

The brave but ugly Supra has faired much worse in the aging stakes. Although it is a great car it can look dated even though it was conceived 4 years later than a ZX.

On hols last week the ZX got the usual admiration - one instance as I drove into the car park at Bolton Abbey. The attendant said "that's an amazing looking beast, I haven't seen one of these. I bet it flies....What is it?"

I told him he'd never guess....."Lotus? TVR? a kit-car perhaps?"

He was surprised when I said a Nissan ;)

No, the ZX, Supra, GTO etc are looked upon as politically incorrect dirt today as the world has been told to buy small diesels, people carriers and Smart cars by the auto-fashion police. "So how much petrol do you use?....my diesel crapbox clone can travel to the moon on an egg-cup of fuel :slap: Cars like that should be banned....."

Fekk-off!! they drive Beetles to "be individual" but every Tom, Dickhead and W@nker has one....

Sorry, bit carried away. Rant over - going out to waste £50 of shell's finest, won't be long ;) :D

Well you could be right, but doubt it,its got many years left as yet,and they still import them here,so demand is there,if you look at the price of Skylines and Sups,Mitsi GTO's etc prices over last 2-3 years have allso come down a fair bit, main thing is the cost of running these cars, you HAVE to be prepeared to keep on top of them, not put things off until it results in more cost etc,,most people looking for a sporty type car are not wanting this kind of commitment. One thing,we would not be having this kind of conversation if we were in the USA,to say the Z32 is huge out there ,would be an understatement, but of course theres thousands of Zs in the US,things are cheaper, fuel, parts, support, etc etc, think the Z will last out there a good 30years or more, and what with the good dryer weather they have in most parts they dont rot,in fact all Z marques are still big over there, some one in the trade other week told me that the new 350Z has now sold more than anyother Zs in the UK to date, now out numbers us all,not sure if thas a good thing or not,but at least the Z in some form or other will be with us for sometime.

On another note,Mazda look like they maybe setting up for the new RX7 Sports Car next year, according to Sport Z magazine couple months back Nissan will be doing something very special with the 350Z,tit for tat maybe who knows, will be interesting to see,as its Nissans 30th aniversary of the Z Iin 2005 ;)

OK Nelson, right in overview but just one or two nitpicky bits.

It did get a lot of good reports (see the Z Enthusiasts Companion for a contemporary view) and credit in the UK. At the time, it was the most expensive Japanese car on sale in the UK which probably took the shine off a tad but showed a lot of people had a lot of faith in it.

It was discontinued because of the cost of getting it through UK emission regs (I think I read that somewhere :D )

But, and here is Uncle Gio's favourite hobby-horse, it doesn't have a successor. There is no "ZX" in the range.

There is a 350Z but that is the successor to the 280Z not the 280ZX or 300ZX or 300ZX.

Zs and ZXs are clearly very closely related (hooray) but they are different cars with different design concepts for different markets.

At a slight tangent, what is today's equivalent of the 300ZX Z32? State-of-the-art technology, 2+2 grand tourer "personal luxury". Remember, at today's money, a new Z32 should cost about £50k. Maybe the new Maserati?

Other that that, I agree with Nelson 100% :duffer:
