Knocking

This morning on my way to work I noticed that when I accelerated hard from a standstill I heard and felt a knocking from the back end of the car. It doesn't do it when already cruising just from a stand still. What could this be? Drive shaft? Any ideas pleaZe.

does it go away, or is it when its cold, i have no idea, but could be something as silly as a loos drivers seat.

It only happend today so it maybe only when cold. I will drive it the long way home to see if it gets better when the car is warm.

Just to add to Warrens post, the way to tell if it's a loo seat is to see if you can leave it up when you get out of the car.

if it sounds like something is knocking against the floor of your car it's most likely the center-bearing of the driveshaft.

have you checked your boot for small children, they tend to knock around a bit in there biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Had a look when I got home yesterday and I think it probably is the centre bearing. How hard is this to change? How much should it be?

Could be something simple like the exhaust knocking, check the hangers. Jeff TT

Agree with Jeff, check the hangers....

...That was my problem when my 'Prop-Shaft' had gone according to some folk.....

I am having the same problem. If it warms up and then stops is it OK or does the center-bearing need changing? Any one any ideas of how much it costs?

...just bought a centre bearing off this forum for £70 - recommended retail is £140. Haven't put it on yet, but symptoms are like driving with a flat spot on a rear tyre - vibrations throughout the car. On buying the car 18 months ago I was told to look out for back-end knocks on hard acceleration as these could be caused by the rear sub-frame rubber mounts being shot. Like front tie rod bushes they are silicone filled, and it's quite easy to check their condition. Problem is that they come as an integral part of the subframe (£1300) and can't be bought seperately (from Nissan). Although I know of people replacing them with bushes from a Rover of all things.

...good luck

Jack

Thanks for the help guyZ. Think I will take the car off to a garage for a little help. Hope its not the bushes. (£1300 Ahhhhhhhh). Any good garages in the Surrey area. Dont mind travelling abit.

Try giving norris designs a bell they might be able to sort you out with something.

Does this peak at around 80-100 mph? If so, I think I am not far behind you with this problem.

Pants!

Hmmm NORRIS DESIGNS, NOT SURE ABOUT THAT ONE.

Spoke to him on the phone once and was very rude, but then again i moan about most people biggrin.gif

I know of exoticar tim , speak to Simon there he is pretty good.

telephone number : 02082390600

So whats my problem then. Its only just started. Slight knock when pulling away from stop or from very slow. Not very loud. Sounds like the Hand Brake is stuck slightly.

Stuart

Could there be play in the crank shaft?

Thanks again guyZ it sounds like a few of you have the same problem. It is def the centre bearing and will have it fixed soon. Will post how much later so the rest of you can budget for this. Its a real shit cos i just spent loads on the new stereo, and wanted to get an Apexi Boost Controller thingymebob. Is this the best option for a boost controler.
