help battery!!

lo hi,

I didn't use my car for 2 days...

then I used it for about 30min...

then I didn't use it for 2 days...

this morning as soon as I turned the key one tick.. just to that the red indicators on the dash went red... 1 second and all goes dead!...

I thouhgt this is the battery or some fuse...

I go the DirectLine rescue guy around.. and as soon as he got the jump-cable ON... the car got the power back just fine....

He said the alternator looks fine...

and the battery is charging at 14,5 volts.. a bit higher than 14,4 (which is supposed to be the maximum!)

He says I need to change the battery....

What do you say guys... do I need to change it?

Which on eto buy?..

Optima Red Top probably too much...

price range?

What about Halford. Ford Rapid Fit.. nissna?

Thanks for your help....

PS> do you think maybe the battery is fine and could be something else?...then again the guy said the alternator appeared to be ok...

Did he also check the charging-voltage at different rpm's ?

Because sometime at idle it seems fine, but as soon as you start to rev the engine the voltage either drops or increase way over the maximum level.

I think the guy is right about that you'll need a new battery though.

But before placing a new one I would make sure the voltage stays between 13.5 and 14.5 volt while revying the engine.

Also, check that the earth and live connections are good. Remove both ends, clean them up and put them back. If they are bad then they tend to arc when high current is passed, then pass no current at all, while sometimes appearing to still provoide 12v.

ok thanks guys,

yes he checked it a low rpm.. then asked me to rave up a bit.. so I guess he checked at idle and I went to 2000rpm and 3000rpm..

I'll do the cleaning contacts job too...

thanks
