Let say I get a 91-93 Zed (manual/turbo) with 70,000 on the clock that's been (hopefully) treated well... What can I realistically expect to go wrong in 3-4 years.

I do about 4000-5000 miles a year tops...

you will spend more on mods than on going repairs

total amount of repairs that needed doing £6.58 pivot ball

mods £17,000

nothing will prepare you for the amount you spend on fuel!! :D

How about the fact I get 19mpg out of my 200SX? I do a 7 mile trip to work each day...

Fuel costs are nothing to me as I do such limited miles...

you will get almost the same mpg as your 200 but soon as you push the go-pedal economy goes

1st year of ownership

mods for me £3500 ...repairs £100 new battery, other things are brakes tyres etc to me these are general wear which all cars suffer from buy a good one and she will treat you right :)

I think the spectre of a huge repair bill causing total mechanical write-off is always there for most Z owners.

It might well be fine and probably would be. But it might need a massive money repair. Fortunately this forum can provide you with most of the bits / knowhow and even help to fix pretty much anything. That's what they told me anyway ;-)

So should I expect trouble free motoring say out of a 13yr old car with say 70,000 miles on it? (If it's been services and treated well)

Do 300s generally go over 100,000 miles?

most uk zeds 12-13yrs old will of done over 100k but isent alot for a 3.0ltr engine! not a lot when you think about thats approx 7k miles a year

take an M3 OR M5 for instance find one 7 or 8 yrs old 100k+ there just run in then so no differant for a zed :)

import zeds tend to have less mileage! mine is a 93 with 50k on the clock so it says  but the way ther car drives i believe its genuine.japanese dont drive much.probably because there always stuck in traffic LOL

I think the main big money problems would be:

engine - unlucky if you have a problem with it if you pick a decent car

turbos - if they're original you may need to budget to replace them (I did and they're still going 6 years later, although a bit of smoke recently makes me think they may be on their last legs)

gearbox - a lot of people have had problems with j spec autoboxes, but again mine has been OK for 6 years so far

If you buy from someone on the forum you should be able to see if it's had any problems in the past and it has been well looked after. I've had mine for going on 8 years (82,000 on the clock) and a PTU failure is the only major problem I've had. No plans to sell mine either ;)

Same as any performance car, needa a bit of care, no reason why it shouldnt go on forever.

If you buy a 13 year old car its going to have a bit of wear and tear.

If u want a problem free car then buy a new one with a warranty.

Mine, new wheel bearing, new rear section exhaust, HICAS gaiter, oh, and had to buy wipers for it to pass the MOT today (no probs)...now the fuel bill, thats another matter...hehe

only problems i had were perished water pipes, heater matrix and water pump, ptu did play up a bit but seems ok for last year, water pipes are anything from 10 - 20 quid get water pump done with cam belt if it hasnt already been done, suspension can be worn out on car this age so could need replacing, best to buy one u know has had all the problems sorted and u should have happy motoring
