Filter prob blocked, after switcjing it off the muck falls off for a while and unblocks. trouble is why is it blocked. Probably because your box is shot. Sorry.

did u resolve it as it is the same for me

I have just put this on roosters thread. I had the same problem with my box. It would run for a few miles then nothing. Im affraid the news might be bad! As was said previously the filter could be blocked because your clutch set may have burnt out. Does your oil smell burnt and is the colour red or blackish. The burnt smell and black colour means the end of the box. Then again i have known people to just service the box and clean out the filter and ey presto!!! As i say im no expert but can only tell you of my experiance of my failing "boxes", yes thats right 2 of them!!. As i said in Roosters thread, if its an import get an oil cooler on. Good luck matey!!!

aye, ive been in the same boat for last couple of months - only got gears 1 and 2. im waiting for a cheap conversion to come up.

ps. somebody buy ya5's 'box!!!

Mine was like that mate, just not quite as bad!

Drain, flush & renew oil, use dexron 111 oil.

Have a new oil pan gasket ready too.

Mine is fine now, just really gacked up...& the oil was still red!

this has happend twice to me, once on a recon after 1000 mls (dont go to b&l/topgear leic's), then on my s/hand box. no more money on the bloody auto box  . manual conv in progress  & hopefully no more embarrassing breakdowns, mine was last seen being loaded on a wagon outside billing entrance! go manual :)

Always the brake band thats gone when youve only got gears 1 and 2.....

Not a expensive job as the brake band is only around £40+vat, you just need to drop the box ,flush every thing and fit the new band and you will need a torque converter to oil pump seal. you can reuse the oil pump to casing metal/paper gasket as long as its not damaged just coat it with petroleum jelly before refitting the oil pump.....

The 300zx manual either online or on cd will explain all of this....

Actualy its a clutch for third gear, IMHO. Its way too weak for these cars. Hence they often fail. And if you have the ability to strip the box to get the band out, what ever you do, replace the clutch plates as well. And then dont forget to fully drain and then clean out the converter as any contaminated oil will cause probs later. And while your at it, look at the clutch pison seals, as they are cheap and while you there, and also the seals for the servo that applies the band, and etc etc etc.

Andy and Mark: thanks for the advice guys - although id love to have a conversion, if i can fix the problem for a hundred notes then i think thats the best way to go (especially with Christmas around the corner)
