I think I'm cursed when it comes to PC's. My own computer dies a few months back (still not repaired!) and I've been borrowing the folks' laptop (running Windows XP) to tide me over. My Tiscali Broadband package arrived and I installed it and all was well but now I'm starting to have a few problems. It started disconnecting a lot, which I thought might be something I just have to put up with, but now when it disconnects it also closes down all the windows/programs I have open so if I'm writing anything I lose it! Not sure if this is a problem with the computer or the phone line, my landline has also started cutting out occassionally...:(

Also, got rid of some viruses and spyware the other week but for some reason whenever I boot up the computer it always opens Windows Media Player!

I'm not very good when it comes to these things so if anyone can offer any advice that would be great! :)

Cheers,

Leigh.

No problem mate :)

Let me know what the outcome is.

Well, BT did a line check and it turned out fine...but just stumbled on something that makes me think it's a virus after all. As it was disconnecting for the umpteenth time I happened to click on the internet connections tab in the bottom right corner and for a split second I saw another icon displayed labelled "Dialler 14043". Looks like I've got a dialler problem then! Trouble is, it's not showing up on AVG and (though I'm probably looking in completely the wrong places) I can't seem to find it manually. Any suggestions guys?

Cheers,

Leigh

if your on broadband dialer spyware won't effect you m8

not sure why your spyware software aint finding it though?

try spyware blaster and pest patrol

I had a £16 premium rate call on my last BT Bill, rang BT Customer Services with the number shown and they confirmed it was a known dialler. They are crediting my account as they should have blocked a known dialler. Got prem numbers barred too so shouldn't happen again.

Sounds a bit like the old MSBlast virus, which is probably still out there in t'internet. Does "msblast" show up as a process in your task manager?

I had it, and it kept rebooting my PC and causing strange behaviour. Hope your're not just using the XP firewall!

What is wrong with the XP firewall?.

the worms are deffo still about m8

but i don't think thats friday's problem as he said it was disconnecting

not rebooting?

although reading his first post again, he does say closes all windows etc

so i presume he means rebooting, have you run the worm fixes m8??

What does it do EXACTLY when it shuts down? error messages etc...

download the fixblast.exe from here m8

and see what results you get, then will point you towards the worm fixes

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

although if it IS the worm, and you run the removal tool, and then go back on the net without running the fixes you will end up back where you started

so grab the fixes from there as well

or better still here

as herman says above m8, what message are you getting??

if your getting a countdown then it IS the worm

Guys,

I had a quick gander at the PC and it appears that the dialler has been removed. The reason it will disconnect the Broadband connection is that if you use a ADSL Modem instead of a router, the ADSL connection does act like a dial up connection and can be terminated like a normal dial up connection. Any dialler would first drop all exisiting connections before it initiated its own call. (That reads very badly, and I apologise for it - too many "connections"!)

Leigh did have the MSBLASTER virus as his RPC Service was set to "Restart the machine" if the service failed.

When it disconnects it closes down all open windows and running programs and takes me back to the Desktop. Thanks for the PM Mujina, the offer of help is appreciated mate :) (the panda active scan didn't turn up anything BTW!)

However...HUGE thanks to PhilD who spent ages with me on the phone (despite his hangover;)), remotely connected to my computer and made a few changes. No dialler presented itself but there were a few possibly malicious things that needed sorting. Cheers for that mate! If we ever meet I owe you a :duffer: :D

Just a question of keeping my fingers crossed now. If something does now go wrong it's 99.9% certain that it's an actual line fault (despite what the initial line report says!) and it'll be time for the engineer...

When I first got XP I read that you shouldn't rely on it alone for total protection, as it had some shortcomings. Apparently it's better in SP2 though.

Which I don't have and Micro$oft won't let me have :nono:

give me a bell on 01745550346 and i will sort you out with some software to get rid and stop getting again.
