Why is a 1980 Porsche 911 worth twice as much as a 1990-94 300ZX TT ?!?

The 300 is newer, better engineered and rarer. But I'm forgetting...it's not a Porsche !!

The mentality of the average car buyer is scary.

That is exactly it. Porsche > Nissan  Well in fact its the mentality of the marketplace which we cant do much about.

Although, conversely... how many people here would owe a 300ZX if they were over £10-15k. I know I couldnt have bought one.

Yes it's very sad m8. I'm confident the 300 will pick up in price soon though, especially when all the dog rough ones RIP.

LOL We should vet all new and existing members cars and any that are considered dogs should be banned and told to scrap their cars :x:

Not that there are any dogs on here of course...

TRUE - most of us probably bought one mainly because they are cheap for what they are. I also think they look cool and don't like paying 4 a badge - I prefer to steer away from herds also  I like to think a 300 shows a little discretion/intellect/individuality.

It's still strange how Toyota/Honda are perceived so much better than Nissan - and even Skylines are priced/rated so much better than 300s in many ppls eyes. So all this makes them dirt cheap - even tho' they are a record-breaking design (262MPH). Cars are 90% image seemingly.

All this is great when buying, but not when selling.

I don't think it has anything to do with mentallity!

The way I look at it is that there are new cars on the market that have smaller engines, are much more reliable than a Z and are almost, if not quicker than a standard Z. I am in no doubt that the new Megane 225 turbo is quicker than a Z. I know, I beat one, but not by much.

You could argue that they look horrible and aren't as well built but if these types of cars are being produced and only cost 3 times as much, but are twice as cheap to run, the majority will go for the cheaper option. Hence the reason why there aren't many of us in this forum.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Z and if I could afford it, I would get another but you have to face facts. If you can get a new Z for around £20k, why bother spending £8k - £12k on a 10+ year old car, unless you are a performance freak. You have everything new, with warranty and you are never worried about little squeks and noises here and there.

This weekend, I sat down with the Mrs and worked it out that including petrol at £55 per week, the Z was costing me £5000 per year to run. That was standard servicing including tyres. Nevermind mods and breakages.

So I ask you - is £4k justifiable for a 13 year old sports car, when you can get a Cav SRI of the same age for 10% of that?

LOL Its not quicker then surely :slap:

See what you are saying, but a 300ZX has a lot of things a Cavalier SRi lacks

in all fairness i would sooner have a porker than a z any day of the week. yes the z is a supercar but to compare a 911 to a z is daft ill bet 90% of peeps would go for the prker also if they were being honest both are 2 completely diffrent drivers

yuk the 80's porkers really do ming royally. absolutely rotten looking cars. They have not aged well at all.. bleugh.

Gimmes a 60's model or something more up to date though.. yum yum...

I meant a standard Z Pete. My Z was not standard.

Also agree about your SRI statement but take away aircon, HICAS and CC. Not many more things really - may be a few but another 90% values worth? I suppose you could argue that the life span of a 4 pot engine is around 50% of a 3 litre V6, but weighed up against running costs, it just doesn't seem right. If anything, I think £4k-£5k is ok aslong as the car is under 12 years old, sub80k miles and the body work is in good condition, with no history of problems and a good service history.

Horses for courses I guess!

I don't think it has anything to do with mentallity!

Hmm, you must of been a non turbo Z LOL. The Megan is 225bhp, same as a non tub Z but abviously lighter. http://www.carpages.co.uk/renault/renault_megane_renaultsport_225_part_1_20_09_03.asp

Man you must have really fluffed that Megane race, fookin ell that would have been embarrasing :D:D

cos mate, i'll agree with you!!!

My mate has a Carrera 2 soft top and I borrowed it for the weekend a few years ago and what a nasty heap of shit it is to drive LOL,I could not wait to hand him the keys back.

OI!!!!!!!!! We cant all afford to have our Zed's in perfect nick you know. :( I do an area on my car as and when I can afford to do so. If I had the money to throw at it I would get everythink done all in one go. As it is now I have to do most of the work on it myself to save costs. :(

Ivan

i dont rate the 911 at all tbh its image is far to vulgar for my liking, most people that bought 911s in the 80s had more money than sense and were simply giving a 2 finger salute to all the people less sucessful than them, its a sad fact we live in a society where image matters more, than driver satisfaction, i have 2 nissans now and people do say things like why have u bought an old mans car, and ew its a nissan dul dul dull, they soon change there view when i rip out there insides from a blast in the zed :xxx:

Iv driven a few porkers, 911 (966 now?) boxters etc. YUK!!

i really dont like porkers & would have my car over one any day! :)

Man you must have really fluffed that Megane race, fookin ell that would have been embarrasing :D:D

Race was like this!

Going up a long hill with me behind megane at 70 because car infront of megane is doing 70. Car move over, megane and me go for it. I dont get past till 120. At 140 I am 5 car lengths ahead. I dont class that as a kill. The megane is a quick and fast car for a 4 pot.

"A powerful engine with a wide torque curve

Using as its base the turbocharged 2.0 16V engine available in the company’s top-of-the-range models, Renaultsport has developed a high-performance version which remains easy to use in everyday driving. Its output of 225bhp and 300Nm of torque is achieved thanks to changes to key items such as the turbo and the engine’s reciprocal components. With 90% of its maximum torque available between 2,000 and 6,000rpm, the engine provides strong and continuous power up to the highest speeds. The engine exhaust has also been developed to provide a truly pleasing note, with a special twin-outlet system. "

..........and I bet it weights less than a ton and a half. So, compare 150BHP/per/ton megane with closer ratio box, and newly developed technology to 177BHP/per/ton standard Z, with 15 year old technology, you do the math!

Zed 300hp, 280ftlb, 1600kg. Megan 225bhp, 221ftlb, 1355kg.

Nuff said.

Zed 0-60 5.5 topspeed 155mph. Megan 0-60 6.5 top speed 146mph.

Zed looks fantastic. Megan looks crap.

I think the 225 is a quick car for a 4 pot, but it's certainly no match for the Z.

Fookin ell I've beat a megane on low boost :p:D

In an S13?

Yeah :)

My low boost setting is at about 0.8bar on a T28, I doubt that'd give me more than 220-230bhp as 0.95 bar gives 253bhp fly - and 1bar just around 260 (not accurately measured). Car is as standard S13 kerb weight, maybe even a little heavier since I'm always carrying mountains of tools around with me.

The Megane didn't impress me at all tbh. Admittedly though, the gearchanges he pulled off were pretty slick and the car didn't seem to bog down after clutching up again, whereas mine sometimes does.

but to compare a 911 to a z is daft

yes, because the Zed is a better car.
