So I've finnaly got around to ordering a series II PTU..............

My question is, when I come to fit it, do I just plug the new harness into the car's loom, or is it a cut a solder job?

And where would you recomend me to re-locate it? And will this affect the water temp sensor wireing?

TIA

Provided it comes with a loom, this just plugs into the series 1 loom connectors. As far as relocation, I just fitted mine on the original bracket..

Thanks steve, the reason I was asking about re-locating it, is because i've read that it is better to do this.

But on the pluging in bit, does this small loom plug into where the old PTU plugged in, ie the old manky green plugs????

TY

Fitted my II in the same position but was considering moving it over to the fuel filter area. I'm sure Stuart (SMW1) has some pics of his moved to there.

The new loom comes with a fair bit of cable. This does plug into the existing PTU cables and therefore gives you some slack to relocate the PTU. I would recommend treating the original connectors with some contact cleaner and a scrub up..

I think that Stu (SMW1) has relocated his to the passenger side of the engine bay.

I'll have a look, cheers James :D

To relocate it just unwrap the tape where the water temp connectors come out of the loom and they split into seperate pieces.

You can then move the PTU section to the wing above the fuse box and screw it down with one of the bolts that is already there.

You'll just need a bit of insulation tape to tidy things up.

Thanks Chris, much appriciated

Whats the point in relocating? I know people do it when the cambelt cover is removed but doesnt it need to be in the airflow from the fan? I remember something about Series1's overheating and the Series2s having fins to cool better - is that right?

Or are you relocating to somewhere not attached to the block for heat reasons?

Heat is the main reason - As an extra some people use a CPU fan from a PC and fit one of thoses over the top for additional cooling as well.

The Series II is a different type of device. I think the cooling is a valid point (I hear that Series I's may die when the ignition is left on for a long time without the engine running to provide cooling), but having looked at the guts of a series I my guess would be that the main enemy is vibration. Moving it off the engine and onto the body may well help in this respect.
