I know absolutely NOTHING about 300's other than they looks fantastic. I am quite a respected member of the toyota owners club, so am not likely to waste anyone's time. I Currently have a 1990 MR2 with a significant amount of mod's, but its naturally aspirated... I was considering going to the MR2 turbo, BUT, I have always loved the 300's and thought I would check some info out on an owners club.

 

So...my first post ever here!

Well the 300 has a lot more brutal punch than the MR2 T, but its heavier so in standard trim 0-60's aint much in it. 60 + goodbye MR2 T.

 

The MR2 is a better sorted chassis in standard form though the Z can be sorted. Power wise its a case of how deep is your pockets. Thought if your only looking at 400bhp you can just about reach that with a good chip ie (JD stage 3) and a boost controler which will give you 300 ish bhp at the wheels.

 

It all depends what you want as to whats the best car for you. These are just my views and opinions from my own experience. Some of us sink fortunes into these things. Not because they are better than other Jap cars for tuning of handling, but just cos we love em.

I heard the handling wasn't great though? Any comments?

Handling in the dry is pretty good but it's a heavy car. In the wet, you've got to be a quite careful.. Saying that, I've owned a couple of MR2s and found it very easy to get the back end out in the wet. Suspension mods are available which tighten things up a fair bit tho ;)

Good Rubber, uprated springs, Hicas eliminator, poly bushes, camber ajustment kits F&R + Good shocks, F&R ajustable tie bars and bigger brake rotors up front. Have it setup properly and you'll be hard pressed to get a car to handle much better but it all comes at quite a price.

 

Next addition to mine will be traction control for those wet days. Having spent all i've spent on mine over last two years I don't want to park her up a tree. MR2 T comes as a better package handling wise sraight out of the box and if you spend the same money on handling bits would still have the edge but, that awesome grunt when you nail the Z will keep you smilling every time you drive down to pay your overdraft off.

It's good enough, but it is a GT rather than a sports car so the MR2 will easily outhandle it. But as someone said, that is easily sorted.

 

Grip is generally good and I find it predictable, even in the wet (good tyres help here :D ). The problem is the car's weight - as the miles/years advance the weight takes its toll on suspension components. Mine has 73K miles and was owned by a Nissan garage owner for most of its life so it is still pretty tight.

 

Best thing IMO is the midrange wallop for overtaking - not much touches it for passing an HGV, caravan and 2 cars in 1 go on a busy A road..... :bow:
