My Z started running really rough a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was due to the amount of rain that had come in through the bonnet bulge and caused electrical problems.

After swapping the PTU, CAS, ECU, injector connectors and coils at PaulG's we finally found the problem.

Checked the timing and found it's running at about 40 degrees!

Set it to 15 ish and it wont run at all.

The compression was reading about 120 on the front 4 cylinders but only 75 on the 2 back ones :(

The 2 rear plugs had half the bottom electrode burnt off

Is there anything other than a slipped belt could cause this?

There was a lot of water getting onto the cam covers from the bonnet vent.

fook :( have you checked the cam timing yet or just the ign timing?

Just the ignition timing.

I didn't have any way of checking it until I got to Pauls and was so sure it was electrical.

The wierd thing is it starts and runs smooth for 10 secs then goes lumpy and stalls.

When driving it feels like its holding back then suddenly goes like a rocket for 2 or 3 secs then stumbles and almost completely dies, dragging the speed right down like you threw an anchor out the back.

Worried about the compression readings but it managed 400bhp at Billing :o

How do you check the cam timing?

By looking at the belt?

Ordered a new belt and tensioner today anyway.

Got to be the belt hasn't it if it's that far out?

We could have checked the cam timing while you were here but you did have that appointment with 3 girls and a jacuzzi didnt you ;)

remove the cam belt covers

set to TDC & check to see if the marks on the cam pulleys line up

Sounds electrical to me Chris. Perhaps you ought to hang on to those engine slingers for a bt longer!

Hope you get it sussed soon.

I think it was mechancal, i'll let chris say the cause of the problem, I don't want to open an can of worms lol

My reasoning for it not being a sliped belt, is that Chris mentioned the engine ran ok for about ten seconds. If the belt had slipped, the engine would sound very unsettled at any time and any RPM wouldn't it?

Anyway, enough of this keyboard diagnosis! :) Chris, hope you get it sorted soon mate.

hehe ;) chris posted this up in august :D,

he has been known to have his car off the road for a while though

If the Cam belt was to have slipped you would have a continous problem not and intermittent one.....And the timing being at 40' would have burn't plugs out and could have caused alot more damage.....But i would say you have an electrical problem due to excess moisture.....

lol - not sure now that happened! I usually only check through the first 2 or three pages worth of threads just to see what's been going on. I must have clicked the 'last page' button or something!

So Chris! How's the car as of 2005??? :headvswal
