These are fairly small and light, couldn't we get a group buy going on these?

Cheap aswell, much cheaper than a UK replacement, especially as someone(can't remember who) was recently quote nearly 400 squid by a rip-off Nelson!

What's in the little black box?

As Andy said they could possibly be repaired.

I presume they have a few bits of electronics and a big power transistor inside (as the name suggests)

If they can be opened up the transistor should be replaceable for under a tenner if an equivalent is available...

Could be wrong as I haven't seen inside one of these things.

I used to do electronics repairs many moons ago.

When my Z has got really hot on a long run and I stop for a few minutes it sometimes won't start - completely dead, not a sound when the key is turned. Wait 10 mins and it fires up first turn. Is this a PTU fault on my '91 Z?

Inside the box there will be a number of transistors, but I doubt whether the type you can buy over the counter. I think the problem is most likely physical and is due to heat/vibration. My concern is that the unit is 'potted' in which case there are two hopes of ever geting it apart. Will soon know when someone send me one.

Guys,

I've bought the updated PTU from Courtesy, cost me $158 dollars with TT.net discount, presumably a group buy will make this even bigger. Anyway, its really easy to fit, only need to take the intake pipe to the throttle body off to gain access.

One point, don't be dull like me and fit the PTU to the bracket and then try and put on the car, much easier to put the bracket in place first (bolts are very short, which makes this fiddly) then mount the PTU to the bracket. I was quoted £400 quid for this by Nelson, total cost so far - approx £140 inc postage but not VAT and I got the updated part - can't go wrong.

I also had a few hesitation problems, engine would nearly die as soon as you went to pull away. At the same time my temperature guage was attempting to go off the scale. Cleaned the coolant temp sensor and it seems to run fine now. A good place to start as I was worried it was the CAS too.

Cheers,

John

ANDYP,

have just read a very detailed report on how to fix one of these - pictures the lot - seems to work a treat too so it sounds like you are going to be ok with repairing one of these - It also shows how to move the PTU which I am very tempted to do as my car seems to hate idling for long periods of time but loves it after a good hard blast.
