Guest kanima Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Guys, I know this is a real lame newbie question but here goes!! What's the best way to drive an Auto TT?? What i mean is, after years of driving a Manual i've never owned an Auto before, and am wondering what you do with the one and two gears for best action. Cheers, Quote
Guest Sgt C Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004  Take a :slap: for buying an Auto.......lmao.. I'm sure the Auto boys will be along shrotly to answer ya question mate..;) Wecome to the Mad house as well bud...:duffer: Matt Quote
billynomates Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 personally mine is in drive all the time, never use 1-2 overdrive is also switched on all the time, although your really supposed to when pottering round town have overdrive off, then hard driving ie motorways dual carriageways etc overdrive on, ive always found with overdrives if you keep messing with them it increases fuel £££££ Quote
Guest kanima Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Cheers Sgt, i just hope i haven't started a Man vs Auto thread before i get my answer :D Quote
Guest Sgt C Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 See told ya they would be along soon....:D Well done Billy.... No mate you haven't....well not in my eyes bud...each to there own mate... Quote
Guest kanima Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Hi Billy, i'd forgotten about overdrive. TBH i've had zed for just over a week, and at the mo, (until my wallet really starts to hurt!!) i'm lovin' it toooo much to worry about the cost. Quote
davido140 Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 I sometimes use the 1,2 then drive method, and occaisionally slip into 2 for a bit of engine brakeing if the speed is right (do this when going too fast and if either your gearbox will go bang or the back of the car will overtake the front!!) its prob not too good for the box though. A kiwi guy I used to work with loved his american muscle cars and had a 5.7litre something-or-other and swore by the 1,2,drive method and did it religiously. And of course if you want arse out antics keep it in 1st or second and mash the gas!! :) Quote
Guest kanima Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Another daft question comming!! When i select 2 the gears still change automatically (obviously!!) but doesn't seem to in 1. How come? I'm thinking that 1 means 1st gear and 2 means 2nd and that there wouldn't be a change. Quote
billynomates Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 yep 1 stays in 1, no where else to go 2, starts in one and moves up and down between 1+2 Quote
EvoluZion3 Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 hi. personally i just keep it in D, unless I want a quick boost of power in which case i drop it into 2 if its safe. i think autos still change up a gear to save you blowing the engine up. I've never dared red-line in 1st gear to see whether it does change up or not  Just be careful not to change down manually if youre going fast! Quote
sideshowbob Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Welcome mate, if it's a jap import, make sure you get an additional oil cooler to stop the box overheating! I use o/d off around town etc... o/d on for anything over 60ish. Have you tried the power button yet? Quote
Guest kanima Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 It is a Jap import, and the first mod is the oil cooler. I'm building up to using the power button! At the mo i've only kinda set off carefully and then built up on the gas button. Everyday i fall more in love with my zed. Quote
sideshowbob Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Yeah, power button is good fun! Changes gear higher up the rev range, keep it floored! Try it with o/d off...goes like foook!! Any mods done to it yet? Quote
Guest kanima Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Totally standard import, (at the mo!) Sapphire Blue. Man i can't wait to get back out in her again, the more i look through this forum the deeper in i get! Does this group have track days of any sort? Quote
sideshowbob Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Have a look in the meets & events forum, theres always something going on! Quote
jonce Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Matey, get that oil cooler!!!!!. I was advised to get one. Like a silly fooker i went for spoilers etc....... then bang!! Box blew  Power button is goooooood :) but if you floor it in drive you will still see the power indicator come on. This baby even turns the air con off when you boot it!! I believe the hold button is used when the bad weather is about (snow). Just stops you from booting it and ending up in a ditch. There good in the snow..........NOT!! Enjoy. Ref meetings theres one on Sun 5th Sep. Trax. Come along  Quote [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
FASTREDZ Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 sorry to barge in on your post guys but is it a bad thing that i can do nearly 100mph in 2nd gear in my auto, im sure most of you have tried it, its very near the red line, and yes it will go into the redline if you keep it floored!!! Quote
davido140 Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 It's a little odd how some of us seem slightly scared of our cars going bang! so we dont drive them "properly" should we really be that worried about putting them in the red every-so-often? It's the first car I have been afraid to do it in! must be because you are secretly thinking of the cost of the parts in the back of your head!! :) Quote
Guest christopherdavi Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 Just a little word of experienced warning. When you approach a standard A Road roundabout. my auto NA J spec likes to go into it in third. Half way through the roundabout, particularly in the wet and even more particularly when you are a ham footed arse it'll change down to second when you accelerate out of the junction, with all the attendent problems that'll cause. Basically you can EASILY spin it. Manual is better, cos you're in control of the gears. Just be careful!! As for all the gear changing...I can't be arsed, that's why I bought an auto! pete shrimp Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 100mph in 2nd is way higher than I get, I think mine upshifts at redline in second at between 70-80 or thereabouts. Thats with a higher rev limit too. The best thing about an auto is rolling along at 15ish then putting your foot down and BAMMMMM!! Everything goes blurry :D:D Quote
