Will the o/s turbo fit on the n/s????

I realise the down pipes are sided as well as the turbo feed pipes but are the basic turbo units interchangeable from side to side???

Had a look while the engine was out the oil and water pipes look in the same position. Also the waste gate valves look in the same position as well can this be done????

Thanks in advance,

Alan...........

Just out from underneath the car and I am almost certain they are the same.

Does anybody know if they are different part numbers ??

Ta,

Straight up guys, if you remove all the cast iron downpipes and the alloy casing from the other end, the turbo bodies look as if the oil, water and actuator rods are the same !!!

For example, on the passenger side the actuators are on the side nearest the chassis, and on the drivers side they are nearest the engine block !!!!

Obviously the downpipes, oil pipes and water pipes are sided, but everything else looks the same.

Hopefully,

Alan..

Did someone say my name? Ssh, don't tell anyone it's me!

Yes, it can be done.. and yes, I've done it - aftermarket tubs rather than stock, but the housings were the same (just a BB core).

You just need to spin the exhaust housing around the core (or was it the compressor, I forget - it matters little) till it's in the right orientation.

However, then you have to be really brave, or very stupid, because the bolt holes for the actuator (which is different between the two sides, not identical) will be in the wrong place, so you have to work out, mark, drill and tap new holes into the compressor housing.

If you screw up and puncture the compressor housing, then it's not my fault ;)

It's an, er, fun job.

HAIL 2 MAC 1

YOU WERE SPOT ON MATE !!

Mine were stock turbos and swopped from o/s to n/s no problem !! :D

Had the advantage of having the old fooked turbo there so just changed the alloy housing after getting the large circlip off and the cast was in the same position any way.

Biggest problem was getting the turbo off with the engine in !!

Six and a half hours to get it off!! Made a few mad spanners that Snap-on would be proud off !!

Almost as long to get it back on, really glad it wasnt the drivers side. Reckon you would have to remove the servo to do that side.

Cheers for the advice mate. ;)

Alan.....

Still, no smoke and she is running 1st class.

Well done, your a braver man than me, would have got some else to do it for me......splatt you free mate? lol

If you got the same problem, give it a try.

I am not a mechanic by trade. I am a Coachbuilder, but always had cars in bitz !!! 1st job I remember was changing the clutch in my dads mk2 Cortina !!! I was only 9 tho !!

After 14 years of every kind of American car I fancied a change and bought the Zed as a project. Had it 6 months and never sat my a**e in it, but now that it is eventually running, will road test it next week for the 1st time. Thank god for trade plates !! :p

A big thanx to everybody who has taken the time to answer my queries and stupid questions. One question I asked , Andy Duff said, "no brainer" question.

Sorry Andy, but we all gotta start somewhere mate !!

Cheers,

Alan

mac 1 & mk3mr2 A big thanks to you both :)

Car is running as sweet as it should be !!! :D

Get it mot`d and then maybe a fresh coat of paint. Respray should set me back about 2 crates of Budweiser and a bottle of Glenmorangie !!! :duffer:

Not bad for a basecoat and lacquer job !! More favours due tho !!

Cheers guys,

Alan......

No worries - glad it worked out.. much easier to swap the ally housings over as you did - it was pretty damned nerve wracking drilling & tapping a brand new tub worth a grand .. ok ok, I admit it, I just watched Andy Duff drill & tap my tub :o Still a tad worrying mind ;)

Bl**dy ell.. wish I could get a respray done that cheap :) Wish my garage was big enough to do it myself in really - will just have to wait until my friend gets her new garage built at her new place and then borrow that

  • Author

Remember and tell her to get a good "oven" type heating system installed !

Just in case her car gets cold you understand !! ;)

The respray aint that cheap, gotta do a favour in return, namely he paints my car and I have to replace all the timber framing on his Morris Minor Traveller !!!

Who said a coachbuilders life was easy !!

Alan......

Heh - I'll see what she says ;) She's had a few cars done in her garage (well, the previous one) before now by another friend who's a really talented sprayer, which is handy to know ;)

Heh - a Traveller.. my folks had one of those years back (hell, before I was born I think!) :)

  • Author

You young whippersnapper !!

Where as I will be 43 years young shortly !!

My daughter, (17) just asked me what a Traveller is ??

How the hell do you describe it ??

Doh ! I feel even older !! :o

Cheers again mate,

Alan.......
