It's electronic - no cable, there's an electronic speed sensor on the side of the gearbox which feeds the ECU and speedo.

First thing to do would be get a ConZult done on it if you can, if the ECU can still see the speed then you've narrowed it down to the speedo (as the speed sensor feed goes to the ECU via the speedo IIRC), if the ECU can't see the speed then it's either wiring or the speed sensor most likely..

Yeah, got that too!!!

Buddy deffo your speed sensor. Costs about £80/90 quid. Ive got one sittin in my garage. You can have that for £15 + p+p. Its off my old box. It works fine. Its easy to fit. Only have to undo one 10mm nut under the car and sort the wiring out. Pm if you want details of fitting or you want the part. ;)

If it is an import, and you have a de-restrictor, check that first, in my experience, they go more often than the speed sensor and can cause the same problems.

Might be the speedo its self, but doubt it cos if it was just that the steering would not go hard (I think?).

Only things I can think of will be a KPH - MPH converter gone faulty, or the wiring from the speed sensor to the ecu/speedo is bad?

My speedo on my UK car goes up to 120mph even when you are doing about 50mph and then it goes really wild and starts bouncing right round from 180mph and down to 80mph and then back up. It really bugs the hell out of me and then the next day it seems ok ????

an expensive option m8, but maybe buy a gps radar while your getting it sorted, as it has a speedo on it (more accurate than the car speedo)

not entirely wasted as it will serve a good purpose even when you get it sorted, and just plugs in the cig lighter;)

(road angel or similar)
