Original remote locking fob

I have the original remote locking fob but no idea how it works.

 

I pushed a few buttons and there were some beeping noises but I thought it might immobilise the car or something.

 

 

Does anyone actually use one (my alarm remote unlocks the car anyway) or shall I pop it in the bin? Would it open the boot? I'd quite like that if it did.
