my z crunches when i put it in 4th it's only that gear and only when i boot it, if i drive it normally it wont do it.

I've fitted a short Shifter could it be that i've done it up too tight where the bolt goes through the pushes, this is the pivot point which joins it to the linkage, it is fairly stiff all round through the gears.

Or do you think it could be some thing else???

If you search you'll see that the 4th gear synchro can be weak and there was a mod for early zeds with sets of replacement gear parts. Fast changes defeat the synchromesh and crunch. Otherwise its a grin and bear it issue or use I think Redline transmission oil which apparently helps a lot. Do some searching on Redline for more info. The A to Z book on zeds lists the part numbers of the gears etc if you fancy rebuilding your gearbox.

Yeah, mine does the same - hence the brand new box sitting in the garage. A bit extreme I know, but then I'll refurb the old one and sell it. Redline does make a little difference but at approx £60 I'm not sure it's really worth it - if the synchro is shot then different oil won't fix it !

out of interest andy how much was the new box or recon on an old box? I'm seriously tempted to get my reconned,

Argh... that means lots of dosh, how much life does it roughly have left when it start doing this, if i kept driving it would this do any more harm.

How much roughly to get it sorted or replace it.

Would it be worth me using the oil to help it last a bit longer.

I got a brand new gearbox, still on the Nissan pallett for a grand. Not sure how much the recon will be, but I'd guess that the parts will be £100-200, plus labour.

redline MT90 has defiently made my gearbox changes smoother, its not a miracle cure though but i thought it was worth the try, i still get a clunk when cold.

the short shifter will exagerate the problem however though as i think you are finding
