Folks,

Gotta deliver the Misses and brats down to Wales on Sunday, then pick em up on Thursday. My Route is Reading to Saundersfoot- dead on 200 miles each way, so a total of 800 miles for the 2 round trips. Obviousley the petrol bill is starting to scare me so was trying to see if anyone knows the optimum speed for Mway driving in an auto TT (60, 70, 80?? or what revs to keep for best mpg). Hope I dont end up having to drive her Mazda 323 :(

Bad news is I miss going to the pod this Sunday, but good news is I get 5 days of peace and quiet to tinker with the zed, channel hop, lay in bed and live like a slob filling the house up with pizza boxes and beer cans :D

Cheers!

i always think

the faster you go

the quicker you get there

the less fuel you use.

You have it - 60 70 or 80. You wont be able to stay at 60 once the kids start the !are we there yet routine!!" but 80 should still make 26mpg

ya right folks- cant complain though- she doshed me over 500squid from her business, so thats 200 for fuel, and 300 for pizza, beer and lapdancers.

Oh and the zed will no doubt need another oil and filter change so better squeeze another ton out of er when she gets back. Its a hard life I tell ya.

you lot kill me- I knew I wouldnt get sensible answers on a friday night as anyone whos stuck in front of the pc on a friday night must ave there chops round a bottle of beer or two or four... :)

Done some research and it looks like its gonna cost me 4x tanks of Shell.

What about a nice juicy burst of nox, surely that would blast me to the severn bridge??

Or I could always drive 2 feet behind in the slip-stream of some phsyco white van man :nono:

give her a ticket for a train that way u aint got to drive back and make 2round trips problem solved :) total cost approx £100 keep the kids under the seat save money there 2 meaning for more beerz

good ideaz greg, but you aint met my my misses, shes real fussy and the only way to guarantee 5 days peace is to dump them off there- well worth it even if it does cost me a fortune and come back on the back of an AA truck!

doesnt idle give out the best mpg

no it doesnt!! the engine is very inefficient at idle!!

its about 55-60mph. I think I remember readint is when the revs are just a little bit under 2000rpm

Cost me 150 to go from Kirkcaldy to York to Billing to Kirkcaldy. Took it easy most of the way. But English Optimax seems to be more expensive than Scottish Optimax. Why not take them down in the zed and pick them up in the 323?

Engines are most efficient at the point they produce peak torque (I think).

And obviouly in top gear.

But that doesn't take into account aerodynamis. Air resistance builds massively as you get faster (to the square or cube of the speed??????????) so much over 85 I guess it'll gulp down the juice.

I got 320 miles from one tank on my 300 auto but I had just got it and it was wet and I drove sooooo carefully!

As SRRAE says 60mph most efficient - most cars produce best mpg ".....at a steady 56mpg.....) Although 80 in a ZX seems to be pretty efficient.

I have had around 23mpg average on a 220 mile trip to Yorkshire at a steady 90-100 on the M1.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

doesnt idle give out the best mpg

idle = 0 miles whilst using a gallon of petty,

try to stay @ about 60mph and I think from my experience cruise control don't help as much on consumption, also get behind an HGV and stay in the slipstream........

It's a Zed, it's never gonna be cheap!

mmmm, how can I say this... the dappy so and so of a Mrs eventually decided to give me a break and drive the frigin Mazda down to Wales herself.

So thanks all you lads for all the info and sorry for wasting valuable thread space, although I shall remember it all for when I have a long bit of open road before me. Got a wimpering call from her earlier- it took her 5 1/2 hours to do the 200 miles through downpoors and Cardiff city fans. Sure I would have done it in 2 1/2 hours in the zed :)

All I gotta do now is enjoy the peace and quiet :duffer:

on my trip to Billing I cruised at 80 av on the way back and managed 26mpg

also get behind an HGV and stay in the slipstream........

I was behind PaulG on the way there which was just as good

LOL
