Guys,

 

A lad at work with a standard MR2 Turbo reckons that he can beat not onyl my car, 300zx tuned to high 300bhp's, but alos kick the arse of any s14 on a 1/4 mile strip.

 

He also reckons that a standard MR2 does the 1/4 mile in 13.5s......

 

How can this be, my 300zx standard has a quicker 0-60 and 0-100, and yet he claims his 1/4 mile time is better than most 300zx standard 1.4 times of about 14 seconds......

 

What do u guys think?

I really like the 300 dont get me wrong, we are all Japanese car lovers here. But im into the small nippy,noisey stuff. I can see the attraction of a nice squishy 300/GTO though.

Mrodgers, for those who know how to fully exploit the MR chaissis then they have excellent handling. If the Mr2 was so pants on handling then why are they very well placed on the TOTB3 handling points? FYI i have a friend who has a tuned 944 (IIRC around 300+ brake) No challenge i show him a clean set of heels every time!

 

With the right tires in the wet the Mr2 is still a very capable car!

Yea some people have trouble with 2's in the wet. But it just takes a bit of control and practice.

Id expect a porsche to be a very good handling car aswell, I can deffinatly see it out handling a 2 when driven well.

If we all bought the car which is 'right' in your opinion, life would be boring.

i would say that my 944 was a better handling car then the zed. though the zed looks better, sounds better and is quicker overall.

mr2's are well packaged neat cars, the turbos are fast and with a few suspension upgrades they are good handling cars, I'd steer clear of the NA rev 1's as the suspension and handling is shockin, the rev2's are slightly improved due to engine placed 1inch forward and better suspension setup i think (maybe they moved engine in rev3), the turbos have better handling but i'd still pick a rev 2 over a rev 1 if what you are looking for better handling.

 

I've been tempted to pick up an mr2 turbo rev2/3 as a toy/track car for a while, I prefer my zed on the open road however, its a much smoother journey and defiently where my heart is. I don't have any interest in 1/4 mile driving either,

 

As to reliability, i've covered 25k miles and only replaced MB cylinder and starter motor and clutch. The car is a UK model and up to 117k miles, a freind of mine has had his mr2 for 6 months and spent nearly £2grand repairing it, it depends on the car that you buy.

 

mr2 vs 300zx however..... they both come from japan and have T-bars and are evenly matched powerwise until around 60mph and the zed will then pull slightly stronger than the mr2. 0-60 difference of .2 seconds?!?! do you really think you are going to notice that in real world situation? nope, its just bragging rights.

 

End of the day you may beat a ferrari to 60mph or over a 1/4mile, but he still drives a ferrari and lives in a big house ;)

I opted for a 300zx because it looks good inside & out + it's fast and handles really well. The MR2 isn't to my taste but that's just me.

IMO, it's not just about performance, it's the whole package that counts.

Hang on, dont MR2's have pop up headlights??? didnt pretty much every manufacturer decide they were a bad idea and discontinue cars with them around the end of the 80's ?? 300zx up to '89 for example? the GTO soldiered on till the mid 90's then decided they were a bad idea and ditched them in the face lift... any others??

I dont mind the MR2 being a faster car, or better handling which it probably is.
