Gearbox on a mates zed is making a grinding noise, initially under load in second, then 4th joined the party and now third is starting, is it a new box scenario or is there another possible cause?

Featured Replies

is it a bearing type noise? does it make any difference with the clutch dipped?

guy said it sounds like two plates rubbing, and it goes away when the clutch is dipped

could be the input shaft bearing. does it do it when stationary??

a rebuild may prove the most economical depending on the damage. if its only bearings then it shouldnt cost too much

sounds to me as if the release bearing is on its way out as mine does that could be the release bearing making contact slightly with the disc hence when clutch is dipped noise dissapears due to bearing making full contact but i aint no expert but sounds a good explanation ;) and crunching maybe clutch on the way out all together so new release bearing clutch etc

release bearings tend to make the noise when the clutch is pressed, which is when the release bearing is under load ;)

cheers paul, will pass it on to him. How difficult a job is replacing the bearings/ re-build?

never done a zed box, but i wouldnt have thought its too bad a job. VW boxes i used to pull em, strip & rebuild then fit them in the same day!! :)

Fook me that brings back memories... vw boxes, especially with them stupid spring

loaded flanges for drive shafts lol

I think Pauls right input shaft bearing sound like their shagged, full strip down required

and possible an induction heater required to warm bearings up to fit em(or an old chip pan)lmfao
