Top Speed ?

Hi all,

After all the time I owned my Z, I have never had the opportunity to try its top speed.....until last night !!

I started at 70mph and then blasted it....I backed off at 140mph because basically I don't want to die yet. Anyway, what suprised me most was not that it was going that fast, but the stability of the beast at such a high speed. It was rock solid...no shaking at all. Amazing ! Also, I noticed that at about 110mph, something like extra happens to the engine and the speed just rockets up even more. It's like there's a third turbo or something !!

What do you guys think ? What has your top speed been in a Z....on a race track of course ?

A.

yes m8 I was on a airfield on mars and I did just the same and experienced just the same...

quick acceleration from 100/110 to 140... great stability and I even had my roof off!!!

So I backed off at 140...

exactly the same smile.gif

I find that mine is never fast enough between about 50-90, but after that it's not a problem. Just those times when you're overtaking 3 rather than 2 cars you know ...

Never done more than 140 though (in a car), need longer roads and/or less cameras.

160mph indicated speed on a German autobahn several years ago... Foot welded to the floor and it was still pulling away. Completely stock car, no gimmics. Rock solid and no sweat. I LUV Z's!!!!!

Recently did 145mph to see if the 115mph speed restrictor had been removed by the kph->mph converter ... and yes it was smile.gif

i HAD A GO WITH A FERRARI 355 down at the nurburgring last year and rolling from third i started pulling him slowly untill about 120mph, then my car seemed to get up to 175 (at which point i started thinking of every possible thing that could go wrong so i backed off) biggrin.gif and i really have to say i was well impressed at how this car seems to stabilise itself at over 120mph....

The driver i saw at the Ring the next day and said "so it was you who passed me with the drainpipe exhaust lol" frown.gif biggrin.gif

Ohhhhh I love these sort of threads...HOOLIGANZ...LMAO biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Pussys, I hit 150 in my Soup racing a 328i on the A55 round Chester...cained his arse big time, he who dares, winZ!!!

In the Z??? Hit 130 on the Bangor bypass with me Bro, he was impressed if not a little brown pants dept...LOL biggrin.gif

They've got some kind of variable valve timing though haven't they???

You got it Tim, electronic valve timing adjustment, not sure how it works but from what I understand it's a bit like the VVT set up but electronic.

You hit about 3500+ and wowie, we're off, I keep my auto in OD off and sport round the country lanes just to keep the revs up there, nearly cought me out the other night as I almost had a conversation with a tree biggrin.gif

155 verified by gps, M20 very late one night - you gotta love it, a 306 tried, he was doin well until about 120...

Tim

Only done 115mph in Z as awaiting delimiter!!

On it's way thanks to paul...

Did 135 in my Mitsubishi Galant the other week whilst racing and beating a Lexus

The valve timing adjustment on the Z is only on the exhaust cams (from memory), operated by a solenoid which sits in a needle bearing I think on the end of the cam. Basically at certain RPM the solenoid moves the CAM toward the front of the engine, thus swopping between two sets of slightly differently ground lobes...

I did 130 over the moors in derbyshire on nice evening, I didn't stop at that for to long as i was about to go down a 1-5 hill with a couple of switchbacks on.

Az - just thought I'd step in and correct you on this one..... smile.gif

The hydraulic cam adjustment is on the intake cams. As the revs increase the cams are slowly retarded to give more power. Unfortunatly not as advanced as the Honda VTEC, but hey - we've more more horses!!

OK wrong cams smile.gif

Slowly retarded? Hmm.. I was under the impression that it was two distinct sets of lobes...?

OK - yes, it appears I was talking via my posterior on that bit of cam info.. Here's a pic to prove me wrong (d'oh! biggrin.gif)

I've hit 160 twice, each time was due to Johnny egging me on in his 'green machine'. I wouldn't normally hit such mad speeds wink.gif

Both times were on a deserted runway.

Dave

My fastest ever was 176mph and the car was still pulling! felt like it had at least

another 10mph.

I have been 125 beating a SX and a Carlton. Looked like they went backwards.

Been on the back of a Kawisaki X-UP doing 165mph down the M58.

Nice to see you Dave, where you been?

Hmmmmm

Is that the time i overtook you ??????

140mph on a deserted stretch of my own private stretch of the A1 Peterboro'

Speed limited kicked in and car was still accelerating *so hard* that when the limiter kicked in the car actually violently stopped accelerating!!!!!

I know my car had **LOADS** more, my oh my I love the ztt.

And I agree this is where these cars are so strong, the sheer forced grunt from 3rd gear onwards, it has embarresed many a scooby and humbled a 911 turbo.

That is why Nitrous is so good in these cars, gives them a good kick low down, I'd love NOS, be my no1 upgrade smile.gif

:)

Tezza the only time that your z will pas my

stillen beast is when I take a sparkplug out

and run on five pots!!! LMFFAO!!!

147 mph and still accelerating strong, had to back off because i was running out of

private road (and my junction was coming up!)

That's more like it !!

I've got 140+mph many a time on motorways around the London area, usually late at night when traffic's light (keeping an eye out for PC Plod!).

One time I managed 165mph (on the clock)down a favorite stretch of mine (no traffic apart from a few Volvos in the slow lane) with at least another 10mph to come. The car felt stable but I didn't want to push my luck too far !! Not sure of the exact speed tho I reckon my clock might be slightly under-reading due to the larger wheel/tyre rolling radius I'm running (265/35 18's).

A friend of mine with an R33 Skyline reckons the best place to do these high speed runs is at Millbrook which has a 2 mile straight which you can enter at ~100. You'd probably fry your brakes tho slowing down from 170+
