hi all

well i finally found out where my smoking problem is coming from,

it seems oil is being drawn from the two breathers at the top of the rocker cover and is being sucked into the inlet side of the turbo!!!!

why is it doing this is it a breather problem or ptu problem maybe both is it worth me changing all the hoses and ptu valves ???

any help greatly appreceated !!!

Howdo m8y,

I think the solution is to replace the PCV's I'm guessing that when you boot it, the crankcase + rocker covers are getting pressurised due to the valves not doing their job. Then when you take your foot off the gas, there's a sudden rush of air + a little oil from the rocker covers, through those pipes & into the inlet manifold ready for combustion!

Saw your car the other day, very nice it looked too! You must be chuffed to get it on the road again:)

Erm, thats normal!!!!! Thats exactly what the breather system does. Ok its only vapour going down the hoses BUT the vapour contains oil which coats the walls of the intake...

But when you boot it, if the valves are fooked then surely you'd end up with 9-15 psi pressure in the crank + cam cases which would then be released when you took your foot off the gas

Eh ? Boost creates pressure in the inlet manifold, not the crankcase. The valves are one-way and that's crankcase to inlet, not the other way round, right ?

Like I said, if the valves were knackered then air could pass both ways. Whilst under boost, positive pressure from the inlet manifold would pass to the cam/crank case

Or am I missing something, do the valves normally get stuck shut?

You're missing the fact that the hoses join the intake BEFORE the turbo compressor so are never in a positive boost situation ;)

Also if the valves were stuck half open then you probably wouldn't get the car to start in the first place as there wouldn't be enough compression.

Just goes to show, you think you know something & then you find out you're wrong lol. After looking at the manual I think I now know how it works

PS. SMW1, we're talking Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valves :)

Also if the valves were stuck half open then you probably wouldn't get the car to start in the first place as there wouldn't be enough compression.

Stuart talking about PCV valves not intake/exhaust valves

thanks for the replys fellas, shaunmac glad you like the car really glad its going again, give me a bell some time so we can meet up again :duffer:

well just to let you know it has sucked a litre and a half of oil into my intake pipes

the zed is a auto so when i floor it in second it bellows out a load of blue smoke and when i go down hill and start off again a nice puff of blue smoke,

my guess is something to do with the breathers cos on normal driving it doesnt smoke, when i floor it and the turbos spool up, air is being sucked into the turbo at quite a vacum, but because the breather is connected to this turbo intake pipe it is sucking air an oil from the rocker cover too, a hell of a lot of oil

Nah the feeds from the rocker covers should not be drawing oil through  I'd check the rest of the breather system - PCV valves etc

Stuart talking about PCV valves not intake/exhaust valves

Erm yeah I knew that  ;)

That will teach me to read the whole thread next time :slap:

Never mind, It's friday

My understanding is (after having discussed with PeteR) that one of the causes of smoking like this is that oil is drawn throgh the turbo shaft oil seals and collects in a dip in the pipe after the turbos. When you then give it some welly that small puddle is blown down the exhaust into the hot cats which produces a plume of smoke. This may help explain why mine smoked less after having been de-catted. Does this seem feasible ?

yep andy very feasable, but mine has used a liter and a half of oil in less than a month,

im sure it is a breather problem somwhere, if the turbo seals are leaking i think it goes to the exhaust side of the turbo causing the dreaded blue smoke!!

but my oil problem is happening i think before the compressor side of the turbo, my guess is that when im boosting pressure the rocker cover is pressurising causing oil to be sucked out through the breather pipes on top of the rocker cover to the inlet side of the turbos, that would explain why my intercooler pipes are soaking wet with oil, oil is also reaching my air filter pipework im guessing through the recuirc valves!!

do you think i should replace the breathers with a new set including the pcv valves,

ah yes one last question, on the rocker cover breather there is a restrictor in the pipe what end do i attach it to, the rocker end or the inlet pipe end??

cheers

was it you who had the turbo technics breather kit?
